Chapter 27 - Fire Over the Atlantic

The blackout was absolute.
The roaring hum of the mega-yacht's turbines died, replaced by the howling Arctic gale and the groaning of the ice pack crushing against the dead hull. Red emergency chemical lights flickered along the corridors as the ship’s auxiliary mechanical batteries kicked in, casting an eerie, hellish glow over the iron corridors.
*"Intruders on Deck One! Ballast intake breached! They're in the wire—"*
The Russian sentry's radio call cut out with a wet, choking gurgle.
Vincent emerged from the darkness of the lower cargo hold like an apparition from an ancient nightmare. His thermal combat suit was slick with freezing seawater, his suppressed submachine gun spitting silent, lethal bursts of fire. Two Russian mercenaries collapsed before they could shoulder their rifles, their blood steaming as it splattered against the frost-covered bulkheads.
Behind him came Antonio and the old-world Sicilians. They didn't use modern tactical clearing methods; they moved with the brutal efficiency of butchers who had learned their trade in dark alleys. Shotguns roared at close range, buckshot tearing through heavy winter parkas, the sound contained within the claustrophobic steel corridors.
"Clear!" Antonio rasped, racking his Benelli shotgun, stepping over a fallen body without a second glance. "Engine room secured, Vincent. The rudders are sabotaged. This ship is going nowhere."
"Luca, report," Vincent whispered into his throat mic.
*"Bridge is ours, Boss,"* Luca's voice crackled through the static-choked headset. *"Donna Ruby found the override for the detention deck. But Voronin took Caterina. They're heading for the top observation deck—there’s an auxiliary helicopter fueled and ready on the bow pad!"*
Vincent’s blood turned to magma. "Ruby, where are you?"
*"I'm in the ventilation shaft above Deck Three, Dad,"* Ruby’s small, steady voice came through the comm. *"Voronin has four men with him. They're dragging Mom up the emergency stairwell. He has a remote detonator in his left hand. If he reaches the chopper, he’s going to scuttle the ship with everyone inside."*
"Hold your position, Ruby!" Vincent ordered, breaking into a dead sprint up the iron stairs, taking them three at a time. "Do not engage! Ruby, that is an order!"
There was no reply.
On Deck Three, inside the narrow, frosted crawlspace of the maintenance ducts, Ruby Falcone peered through an aluminum exhaust grate.
Below her, in the dimly lit corridor, Nikolai Voronin was dragging Caterina by her bound arms. Caterina was fighting back fiercely, digging her heels into the deck, forcing the towering Russian to curse and yank her violently.
"Move, you Sicilian bitch!" Voronin snarled, striking Caterina across the face with the butt of his heavy Stechkin pistol.
Caterina fell to her knees, blood dripping onto the steel grating, but she glared up at him with unyielding defiance. "My husband... is already behind you, Nikolai. Listen to the dark. That sound isn't the storm. It's the Falcone reaper."
Voronin raised his gun, pointing it directly between Caterina's eyes. "Then you die first."
Above him, the exhaust grate broke away.
Ruby dropped from the ceiling like a falling hawk.
She landed directly onto the shoulders of the mercenary flanking Voronin's right, driving the ceramic dagger she had hidden in her coat straight down into the soft junction between his neck and collarbone. The man choked, collapsing beneath her weight.
Voronin spun around, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief at the sight of the nine-year-old girl standing over his dead guard, her hands covered in blood, her eyes blazing with absolute fury.
"Ruby!" Caterina gasped, her voice breaking with terror and awe.
Voronin recovered instantly, lunging forward with his scarred mouth open in a roar, his massive hand reaching to snap Ruby’s neck.
Ruby didn't run. She ducked beneath his reach, drew her suppressed P90 from beneath her winter coat, and emptied the remaining ten rounds directly into Voronin’s right knee and hip.

The Pakhan shrieked, collapsing onto the deck, the detonator slipping from his bloody fingers and skittering across the floorboards.
