Chapter 28 - The Reunion of Iron and Ash

"Mom!"

Ruby dropped the spent weapon and threw herself into Caterina's arms. Caterina, despite her broken ribs and bleeding wounds, wrapped her zip-tied hands around her daughter, pulling Ruby against her chest so tightly it seemed as though she would fuse their souls together.

"Ruby... oh God, Ruby, my baby..." Caterina sobbed, burying her face into her daughter's snow-dusted hair, tears washing trails through the grime on her cheeks. "You came... you actually came..."

"Dad is here," Ruby whispered against her mother's neck. "We brought the whole family."

Heavy combat boots thundered up the stairwell. Vincent burst into the corridor, his rifle raised, his eyes scanning for targets.

When his gaze fell upon Caterina and Ruby huddled on the floor, the ruthless, invincible Don Falcone dropped his weapon. The iron facade that had terrified the Five Families cracked into a million pieces.

He fell to his knees beside them, pulling both of them into his arms.

"Caterina..." Vincent’s voice broke, an agonizing release of twenty-four hours of sheer, suffocating terror. He kissed her forehead, her bruised cheeks, her lips, his hands shaking as he drew a combat knife and sliced the zip-ties binding her wrists. "I have you. I have you both. It's over."

Caterina gripped Vincent’s face with both hands, her thumbs tracing the fresh cuts along his jawline. "You idiot... I told you to stay in New York... I told you the docks were a distraction..."

"The docks mean nothing," Vincent growled, resting his forehead against hers. "This empire is built on you. Without you, there is no House Falcone."

A wet, agonizing cough interrupted them.

A few feet away, Nikolai Voronin was dragging himself toward the fallen detonator, leaving a thick trail of dark arterial blood on the frosted floor. His hip was shattered, his breathing shallow and rattling, but the madness in his eyes burned undiminished.

Vincent rose slowly to his feet. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an abyss so dark that even the frozen Arctic air seemed mild by comparison.

Vincent walked over to Voronin, placing the heavy heel of his combat boot directly onto the Russian's shattered kneecap.

Voronin screamed, arching his back in agony, his fingernails clawing uselessly against the steel floor.

"You wanted my wife," Vincent said, his voice a low, terrifying vibration. "You wanted my daughter. You wanted my empire."

"Kill me..." Voronin wheezed, blood bubbling from his mouth. "Kill me, Falcone... you're already... too late..."

Vincent drew his Kimber .45, cocking the hammer back with a crisp, metallic snap. "I am going to kill you, Nikolai. But first, you are going to tell me who inside the American government gave you the clearance codes for my docks."

Voronin looked up at Vincent, a bloody, hideous grin stretching across his scarred face. "Look at your wife, Vincent... Ask her... Ask her who opened the door..."

Vincent’s brow furrowed. He turned his head slowly toward Caterina.

Caterina was standing, her arm wrapped protectively around Ruby. But her eyes were no longer filled with the relief of a rescued hostage. They were filled with a profound, terrifying dread.

"Caterina?" Vincent whispered.

"He's telling the truth, Vincent," Caterina said softly, her voice trembling in the freezing air. "Voronin didn't breach our vault. The authorization didn't come from Lucchese. It didn't come from the Russian Ministry."

"Then who?" Vincent demanded.

Caterina looked down at the swallow comb resting in Ruby’s small hand.

"Domenico," Caterina whispered. "Your father isn't dead, Vincent. And he wants his empire back."
