Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

Valentina sat on the floor, coughing hoarsely, her hands flat against the cold marble as she stared at the shattered remains of the high-backed chair. The shock was giving way to an uncontrollable, venomous fury. Her hair was disheveled, her expensive emerald dress rumpled, her throat burning with the purple shadow of Vincent’s handprint. She had never been touched, never been denied, and never been humiliated like this in her life.
She hauled herself up, using the edge of the banquet table for support, her chest heaving violently.
"You're a monster," she wheezed, her voice raspy, spitting the words with pure, concentrated venom. "A savage. A street rat in an expensive suit. You think you're God, Vincent? You think you can destroy me without consequence?"
Vincent adjusted the cuffs of his shirt, entirely unmoved by her words. He walked slowly back toward the head of the room, stopping directly in front of the microphone that had been set up for the birthday speeches. He didn't speak into it. He simply stood there, waiting.
The atrium doors swung open once more.
This time, it wasn't Mateo with Ruby. It was Marco Bianchi, Vincent’s head of private intelligence and black operations. Marco was a quiet, unassuming man with dead eyes, carrying a thick, red manila folder stamped with high-level federal classifications.
Marco walked straight down the center aisle, paying no attention to the shattered mahogany or the scattered diamonds on the floor. He stopped in front of Vincent and handed him the file without a word.
Vincent took the folder. He didn't open it immediately. He held it in his hands, turning his gaze toward Valentina, who was watching the folder with sudden, sickening dread.
"Did you think I was late to my daughter's birthday banquet because of traffic, Valentina?" Vincent asked, his voice chillingly conversational.
Valentina swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
"You thought I was detained by business at the port," Vincent continued, casually flipping the folder open with one finger. "And indeed I was. But not my business. Yours."
Vincent pulled out a stack of high-resolution surveillance photographs and thrown them onto the table. They scattered face up, sliding across the white linen right in front of the front-row capos.
The photographs showed Senator Donald Vance—Valentina’s father—sitting in a private booth of a discreet Washington restaurant, shaking hands with the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Organized Crime Division. Sitting beside them was Valentina’s personal attorney.
Valentina gasped, the blood draining completely from her face.
"For six months," Vincent said, his voice rising, resonating with thunderous authority, "you have been feeding your father the internal shipping manifests of the Falcone docks. You believed that if you gave the Justice Department enough evidence to indict my top capos, my empire would be crippled. You believed that I would be forced to sign over the legal ownership of the Falcone holding companies to you, in exchange for your father's 'intervention' with the federal prosecutors."
The room erupted into an immediate, furious murmur. The capos—men who valued omertà above their own lives—looked at Valentina with open, homicidal disgust. Uncle Carlo gripped his cane, his eyes burning with outrage.
"She's an informant," someone hissed from the back.
"Treason," another capo growled, his hand openly resting on the grip of his concealed firearm.
Vincent raised a single hand, and the room instantly silenced itself.
"Worse than an informant," Vincent said, turning his lethal gaze back onto his wife. "A parasite. You didn't just want to steal the empire, Valentina. You wanted to erase my daughter. Today was your first test, wasn't it? Publicly humiliate Ruby. Establish Ethan as the rightful heir in the eyes of my syndicate. Show the families that the Falcone bloodline ends with me, and the Vance dynasty begins."
Valentina was trembling from head to toe now, backed against the edge of the table. "Vincent... it's a lie. It's a setup! My father would never—I was doing it to protect us! To give us a legal exit from this life!"
May you like
"There is no exit from this life," Vincent snapped, his voice dropping into an icy, final rhythm. "And you do not protect my family. You tried to execute it from the inside out."
