Chapter 46 - The Unraveling

The stone doors parted with a sound like grinding continents.
The core chamber was blinding. In the center of the vast circular room hovered a sphere of pure, incandescent azure plasma, forty feet across, spinning within three concentric rings of floating obsidian. But the rings were wobbling wildly. Where the Directorate's kinetic drill had penetrated the ceiling, thick fractures leaked boiling white steam and streams of molten slag that rained into the energy well below.
*CONTAINMENT INTEGRITY: FOUR PERCENT,* a disembodied voice resonated not from speakers, but directly inside Sofia’s skull, vibrating through the bone of her inner ear. *COLLAPSE IMMINENT. SEISMIC FRACTURE IN THREE MINUTES.*
"The terminal!" Cassian shouted, pointing across a narrow stone causeway toward a raised dais directly beneath the hovering sun. "Victor, stay at the threshold console! If the feedback surges before the pilot is locked, you must manually trip the emergency breakers, or the blast will incinerate the entire descent platform!"
Victor looked at Sofia, his green eyes burning with raw, desperate protective fury. "Sofia, this feels wrong. The whole structure is coming down."
"We don't have a choice," she said, squeezing his hand with cold, trembling fingers. "Watch the door. If anything happens to the field... get back to the sphere."
"Not without you," Victor swore, his jaw set in stone.
Sofia and Cassian ran across the narrow causeway. Below them, an infinite chasm plunged into the glowing heart of the planet, where waves of raw gravity pulled at the fabric of their clothing.
They reached the central dais. In its center lay a hollowed stone plinth, shaped like a reclining sarcophagus, lined with millions of tiny brass filaments that twitched like living nerves.
"Place your wrist into the left socket," Cassian instructed, his breathing ragged as he unclasped his sword belt and threw it aside. "I will take the right. When the interface registers the twin frequencies, the purge sequence will initiate. Once the sarcophagus closes over me, Sofia... you run. You run back to the pod, you take Victor, and you blow the ballast tanks. Do you understand me?"
Sofia looked down at the twin socket. Her bracelet hummed with terrifying intensity, pulling her arm forward as if drawn by a massive magnet.
"I understand," she whispered.
Together, father and daughter lowered their wrists into the stone recesses.
The moment the obsidian bands slotted into the ancient grooves, a blinding surge of golden light shot up their arms. Sofia gasped as agonizing heat flooded her veins, paralyzing her muscles. The rings around the hovering sun suddenly snapped into alignment, freezing in place with a deafening metallic clang.
*TWIN KEYS ACCEPTED,* the ancient voice echoed through her mind. *PRIMARY GENETIC MARKER CONFIRMED: SUBJECT CASSIAN WARD. SECONDARY MARKER CONFIRMED: SUBJECT SOFIA WARD.*
Cassian closed his eyes, bracing himself for the sarcophagus to draw him in. "It’s working," he gasped through the pain. "Sofia... forgive me."
*COMMENCING PURGE HARMONICS,* the voice chanted. *SELECTION MATRIX COMPLETE. CANDIDATE CASSIAN WARD REJECTED: CELLULAR DEGRADATION DETECTED. CORRUPTED BIOMETRIC SIGNATURE.*
Cassian’s eyes snapped open in absolute horror. "What?!"
*PRIMARY CATALYST SELECTED: UNCORRUPTED VESSEL. SUBJECT SOFIA WARD DESIGNATED AS THE LIVING CORE.*
Before Sofia could scream, the brass filaments within her socket shot forward like living wire, wrapping tightly around her forearm, digging through her leather jacket and piercing directly into her flesh.
The stone floor beneath her shifted. The sarcophagus did not open for Cassian—it snapped open beneath Sofia’s feet, dragging her down into the cold stone tomb.
"Sofia!" Victor’s desperate scream echoed from across the chasm as he abandoned his post, sprinting madly across the crumbling causeway.
"No!" Cassian roared, grabbing the filaments with his bare hands, desperately trying to tear the ancient wires from his daughter’s arm as the machine dragged her down. "Take me, you ancient abomination! Take me!"
The mechanical voice sounded with absolute, merciless indifference:

*PURGE SEQUENCE ENGAGED. SEALING VESSEL IN FIVE... FOUR...*
The heavy stone lid of the sarcophagus began to slide shut, plunging Sofia into absolute, suffocating darkness as the core flared with blinding, apocalyptic fury.
