Chapter 18

Part 19: The Girl the Kingdom Turned Against

By morning, Sofia's face covered every newspaper and television screen.

Some called her the lost princess.

Others called her the billionaire maid.

A few accused her of staging the Crystal Hand ceremony to seize a hidden fortune.

The public argument grew vicious.

Royal supporters insisted she was destabilizing the kingdom.

Anti-monarchists argued that her discovery proved the institution was beyond repair.

Financial commentators speculated about the enormous assets listed under her original name.

Sofia watched the coverage from Evelyn Carter's office.

She felt strangely hollow.

People were arguing about her identity as though she were a company being acquired.

"Can we stop him?" she asked.

Evelyn closed her laptop.

"We can correct false statements.

But you can't stop people from discussing documents that are genuinely connected to your name."

"He's twisting everything."

"Yes."

Sofia looked at the trust records.

"Then we tell the whole truth."

Evelyn studied her.

"That carries risks."

"So does silence."

"Vale wants you to make an emotional decision."

Sofia smiled faintly.

"He'll be disappointed."

They spent the afternoon preparing a legal filing.

Evelyn submitted the royal declaration, the Keeper of Seals' ledger, the original birth certificate, and Gabriel's confession to the Supreme Constitutional Court.

She also requested that the disputed trust assets be immediately frozen and placed under independent judicial supervision.

The filing contained one extraordinary statement.

Sofia Bennett made no personal claim to the disputed assets and requested that any misappropriated funds be identified and returned to their lawful owners.

Evelyn read the statement aloud.

"Are you certain?"

Sofia nodded.

"Every dollar."

"Some of these assets may be yours legally."

"Then the court can establish that after everyone who was harmed has been heard."

Evelyn looked at her for a long moment.

"Your mother would have been proud."

Sofia swallowed.

"I hope so."

The next day, Sofia appeared before reporters outside the courthouse.

She wore a simple navy dress.

No crown.

No expensive jewelry beyond her mother's emerald pendant.

Camera flashes exploded.

A reporter shouted, "Are you trying to become queen?"

Sofia stepped toward the microphones.

"I'm trying to learn what happened to my mother."

Another reporter called, "What about the fortune in your name?"

"I've asked the court to freeze it and conduct a full independent audit."

"Will you accept the throne if the court recognizes your claim?"

Sofia paused.

Then answered calmly.

"A kingdom isn't property someone inherits like a house."

The crowd grew quiet.

"People live here.

They work, raise children, pay taxes, and trust institutions to serve them.

My family broke that trust."

A reporter asked, "Do you blame King Gabriel?"

"I believe he should answer for what he did.

I also believe the law must apply to everyone, including the Crown."

Sofia glanced toward the courthouse doors.

"My mother taught me that dignity doesn't come from a title."

Her voice steadied.

"It comes from what you do when telling the truth costs you something."

She stepped away.

For the first time, she felt free of the need to convince anyone she belonged.

But that night, while Sofia was sleeping, a message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the Crystal Hand.

Its emerald light had gone dark.
