Chapter 23

Part 23: The Throne on Trial

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters occupied every permitted seat.

Outside, thousands gathered beneath umbrellas as autumn rain swept across the capital.

Sofia sat beside Evelyn.

Victor sat behind them.

Madeleine waited on the opposite side of the room, accompanied by her attorney.

Gabriel had been released from the hospital and arrived under official escort.

For the first time, he entered a public room without people bowing.

He looked at Sofia.

She didn't look away.

The hearing lasted six hours.

Arthur Bellamy testified that King Alexander had signed Claire's recognition declaration.

He presented the independent register.

Dr. Helen Marsh confirmed Sofia's original birth records.

Thomas Bennett testified about Claire's disappearance and the threats against her family.

Madeleine admitted concealing the declaration and participating in the financial arrangements under coercion.

Gabriel acknowledged signing forged accusations against Claire.

Victor testified about the palace surveillance records.

He also publicly waived any claim that his legal position should prevent investigation of the succession.

At last, Sofia was called.

She approached the witness stand.

The presiding justice studied her.

"Miss Bennett, you understand that recognition of your lineage may have substantial constitutional implications?"

"Yes."

"And you understand that the Crown's financial arrangements are the subject of ongoing investigation?"

"Yes."

The justice leaned forward.

"Why have you brought this petition?"

Sofia took a breath.

For a moment, she saw her mother as she'd been in the final weeks.

Thin.

Tired.

Still trying to smile when Sofia entered the hospital room.

"My mother died with the world believing she was a traitor."

Her voice trembled.

"She spent twenty years afraid that the people who destroyed her would find me."

The courtroom remained silent.

"She taught me to work hard.

To be kind.

To judge people by what they do, not what they wear or what their names are."

Sofia looked toward Gabriel.

"She also taught me that silence can be a choice that hurts people."

Then she faced the judges again.

"I want the truth established.

I want the people who were harmed to receive justice.

And I want my mother's name cleared."

The justice paused.

"And the throne?"

Sofia looked toward Victor.

He gave her a small nod.

Then she answered.

"I will not claim that being born into one family makes me better qualified to govern than anyone else."

The courtroom stirred.

"But I won't surrender my legal rights in exchange for silence, either."

She placed the final restitution ledger before the court.

"First, establish the truth.

Then let the people decide what kind of monarchy, if any, they want."

Outside, the rain intensified.

Inside, for the first time in twenty years, Claire de Valmont's name was spoken without the word traitor beside it.
