Chapter 41 - At the Brink of the Abyss

Cassian moved with terrifying speed.
Before Sofia could lunge, his right gauntlet caught her wrist, twisting her arm with bone-snapping force. Sofia cried out, dropping the knife as Cassian swept her legs out from under her, slamming her back against the obsidian floor.
He pinned her down, pressing his left forearm directly against hers.
The moment the two bracelets touched, the world went white.
A catastrophic shockwave of raw, unbridled energy tore through the bridge. The heavy glass panes of the observation deck fractured into spiderwebs of cracks under the sheer harmonic resonance. The crystalline terminals around the room sparked violently, three of them exploding in showers of green flame as the Directorate technicians were thrown from their seats by the concussive force.
*SYNCHRONIZATION DETECTED,* a disembodied, synthetic chime echoed through the bridge’s speakers, speaking in a language ancient and terrifying. *PRIMARY CATALYST ENGAGED. CRADLE IGNITION AT NINETY PERCENT.*
Out in the bay, the sea rose up in a massive, five-hundred-foot tidal wall. The brass ring on the ocean floor flared with the fury of a newborn star. Deep within the trench, the continental shelf groaned, a sound so profound and bass-heavy that the entire quarter-mile frame of the dreadnought shivered violently.
"It is done!" Cassian roared over the howling klaxons, his teeth bared in an ecstatic grin as he held her arm pinned against his. "The circuit is locked! Nothing can stop the sequence now!"
"You're wrong!" a voice bellowed from the shattered elevator shaft.
Victor burst through the smoke, bloodied and limping, carrying a heavy Directorate shoulder-fired kinetic launcher stripped from a fallen commando. Without a second’s hesitation, he aimed not at Cassian, but at the massive primary power conduit running vertically up the center of the dais.
"Victor, no!" Cassian snarled, reaching for his sidearm.
Victor pulled the trigger.
The kinetic warhead struck the conduit dead center. The brass housing ruptured, unleashing a torrent of unrestrained plasma that cascaded across the bridge ceiling like liquid fire. The sudden power surge backfed directly into the flagship’s stabilization grid.
Below them, with a deafening metallic shriek, two of the dreadnought’s four hydraulic seabed pylons buckled and snapped.
The colossal flagship tilted violently to port, pitching at a thirty-degree angle. Heavy iron consoles broke free from their moorings, sliding across the slick obsidian floor and crushing two technicians against the shattered forward windows.
The violent lurch broke Cassian’s grip.
Sofia kicked upward with both boots, striking her father in the chest and sending him tumbling backward down the sloping deck. She scrambled to her feet, her boots finding purchase on the brass floor grating as the flagship groaned under the immense torque of the boiling sea.
Out in the abyss, the excavation ring had gone erratic. Deprived of the dreadnought’s stabilizing telemetry, the ring began to wobble on its descent, tearing through the undersea cliffs and triggering massive underwater landslides that turned the ocean into a churning vortex of white foam and black mud.
"You fools!" Cassian shouted, hauling himself up against the cracked frame of the observation window, blood dripping from his lip. His eyes were wide with madness as the twin bracelet on his arm flashed an erratic, blinding crimson. "You haven't stopped the ignition! You’ve destabilized the containment field! If the core collapses without the alignment matrix, the entire shelf won't just shift—it will shatter!"
"Then shut it down!" Sofia yelled, fighting the steep incline of the floor to reach Victor, who was clinging to the shattered elevator frame.
"It can't be shut down from here!" Cassian drew an antique ceremonial sidearm from his hip, leveling the barrel directly at Victor’s heart. "The only override is the manual purge inside the Cradle's heart—at the bottom of the trench!"
The flagship shivered again, a horrifying sound of metal fatiguing under impossible pressure echoing through the hull. Outside, the great glass panes finally gave way under the battering wind and sea spray, exploding inward in a thousand shards of deadly shrapnel.

The storm rushed into the bridge with the fury of an open grave, soaking them in freezing seawater as the floor tilted further toward the abyss. Between father and daughter, the air hummed with lethal static, both bracelets vibrating at the absolute threshold of detonation.
Sofia drew Victor’s secondary sidearm, her arm steady despite the howling gale, her sights locked squarely between her father’s eyes.
