Chapter 36 - The Leviathan Awakes

The shockwave hit them like a physical blow. The roof of the salt cave fractured, raining stalactites down around them as the earth groaned in agony.
Sofia and Victor dashed out of the collapsing fissure, tumbling back out onto the windswept promontory.
The sea before them had transformed into a boiling cauldron of foam and iridescent light. The lead flagship—a monstrosity spanning nearly a quarter-mile of reinforced black steel—had deployed four massive hydraulic stabilizer pylons into the seabed. From the center of its split hull, an enormous brass ring began descending into the abyss, illuminating the dark ocean depths with blinding azure energy.
"The ignition cycle has started!" Victor yelled, steadying Sofia as the ground violently pitched under their feet. "Sofia, look at the bridge! On the forward command deck!"
Sofia raised Victor’s brass spyglass to her eye, adjusting the focus through the driving rain.
The searchlights on the flagship’s deck cut through the gloom, focusing on an elevated iron dais. Surrounding the dais were dozens of Directorate officers, kneeling in utter submission. Standing in the center, clad in ceremonial dark plate with a sweeping cloak of spun gold, was the Commander of the Fleet.
The figure turned toward the shoreline, stepping under the harsh glare of the halogen floodlights.
The glass slipped from Sofia’s trembling fingers, shattering on the wet stones below.
"No," Sofia gasped, her voice barely a whisper in the raging storm. "That's... that's impossible."
"Sofia, what is it?" Victor demanded, grabbing her shoulders. "Who is directing that fleet?"
Sofia couldn't look away from the towering flagship. The commander standing on the bridge had just removed their iron faceplate, revealing a face scarred by old burns, but intimately familiar. The piercing amber eyes, the proud line of the nose, the dark hair streaked with silver.
It was her father.
The man who had supposedly died protecting her ten years ago was not only alive—he was raising his left wrist to the storm.

Glinting in the crimson searchlights, locked onto his forearm, was the exact twin of Sofia’s bracelet. And high above the roar of the sea, the flagship’s tactical broadcast speakers cracked to life, broadcasting his voice across the burning coast:
"Sofia... bring the Key home, or watch the world drown."
