Chapter 45 - The Price of the Forge

They stepped through the *Nautilus-IV*’s hatch and dropped two feet onto dry stone.

The air inside the atmospheric envelope was dry, bitterly cold, and thick with the heavy scent of dry ozone and petrified incense. Overhead, the golden barrier held back millions of tons of black ocean water; looking up, Sofia could see the distorted silhouettes of abyssal scavengers swimming blindly past the translucent ceiling.

Before them rose the Grand Portal: two towering slabs of black basalt, twenty feet tall, inscribed with thousands of interlocking gear-like glyphs.

In the center of the doorway were two circular indentations, precisely the circumference of their wrists.

"The dual fail-safe," Cassian said, stepping forward until the stone glyphs cast long shadows across his face. "The ancients understood that absolute power should never rest in a single pair of hands. To stabilize or purge the core, both keys must be introduced simultaneously. The system reads the genetic lineage and the harmonic frequency of the bands."

"And what happens when we purge it?" Sofia asked, her hand resting on the hilt of the trench knife she had taken from the dead guards. "Does the machine simply power down?"

Cassian hesitated. For a fraction of a second, his eyes shifted away from hers, darting toward the pulsing blue glow leaking through the seams of the massive stone doors.

"It resets," he said quietly. "It dumps the accumulated kinetic charge into the mantle vents, sealing the fissure."

"He’s lying," Victor said instantly, stepping up beside Sofia, his revolver pointed directly at Cassian’s back. "Look at him, Sofia. That's the same look he gave his officers before sending them into the salt mines. What aren't you telling us, Ward?"

Cassian turned slowly, the shadows playing across his hollow, gaunt cheeks.

"The Cradle is not a mechanical battery," Cassian whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion that sounded terrifyingly like grief. "It is an alchemical reactor. The ancients didn't just build it with stone and brass. They built it with spirit. The purge cycle requires a consciousness to guide the harmonic discharge. A biological governor to absorb the catastrophic resonance."

Sofia felt the blood drain from her face. "A sacrifice."

"A pilot," Cassian corrected, his voice cracking. "One person must remain inside the central sarcophagus to calibrate the purge while the other seals the outer chamber. The pilot's neural network will be fused into the matrix. The physical body... will be vaporized by the thermal bleed."

Victor raised his weapon. "You brought your own daughter down here to be burned in your machine?"

"No!" Cassian roared, stepping toward Victor with uncharacteristic desperation. "I brought her here to *survive*! I am the architect! I am the one whose sins set this disaster into motion! The pilot must be me! But I could not open the door alone! I needed the twin key... I needed Sofia to turn the lock from the outside so that I could take my place within the altar and extinguish the fire I lit!"

Sofia stared at her father. In the amber depths of his eyes, she saw no madness now. Only the suffocating, unbearable weight of a man who had realized too late that the empire he had built was paved with the bones of everything he loved.

"Is that the truth?" Sofia asked, her voice barely a whisper against the hum of the pyramid.

May you like

"Upon the memory of your mother," Cassian said, bowing his head. "Upon the grave of the man I used to be. Let me close the door, Sofia. Let me pay my own debt."
