Chapter 32 - The Iron Armada

The gale tore across the high platform of the belfry, drenching Sofia and Victor in freezing spray. Below them, the sanctuary’s lower hall was completely consumed by the raging sea, swallowing Chancellor Vance’s dying curses beneath churned foam and crushed timber. But there was no time to savor survival. Out on the churning horizon of the Sapphire Sea, the blackened sails of the Directorate’s dreadnought fleet parted the squall like phantom monoliths.

Dozens of iron-clad galleons surged toward the fragile coastline, their crimson lanterns glowing like open wounds against the tempest.

"They aren’t here to capture you," Victor yelled over the howling wind, his hand gripping the belfry’s crumbling balustrade. His knuckles were bone-white, his jaw clenched tight. "Those are siege breakers, Sofia. Look at the prow mountings. Those are heavy kinetic mortars. They’re here to wipe this entire province off the map to purge the bloodline."

Sofia looked down at her wrist. Beneath the soaked fabric of her sleeve, the ancient bracelet began to burn with a ferocious, pulsating luminescence. The strange geometric runes etched into the metal spun slowly beneath the polished obsidian casing, vibrating at a frequency that set her teeth on edge. The artifact wasn't just reacting to her heartbeat—it was harmonizing with something out there on the water. Something aboard the flagship.

"We have to move," Sofia shouted back, the adrenaline washing the exhaustion from her veins. "The tide will completely undermine this foundation in minutes. If we stay on this tower, we fall with it."

Victor scanned the perimeter. The causeway back to the mainland was already submerged under three fathoms of rushing current. The only way down without leaping into the frothing rocks below was an ancient maintenance hawser—a thick hemp cable anchored from the belfry’s gargoyle to the jagged cliffs five hundred yards away, once used by lighthouse keepers to haul supplies during spring floods.

"The line!" Victor pointed through the sheets of blinding rain toward the rusted iron pulley hanging from the gargoyle. "We slide the hawser to the cliffs. It's a suicide run in this wind, but it’s the only route left."

Before Sofia could answer, a thunderous boom shattered the air, louder than the storm itself.

From the lead dreadnought, a streak of blinding cerulean fire erupted into the sky, arcing high above the waves before crashing down directly into the bell tower. The impact shook the stone masonry to its marrow. Shards of ancient granite rained down, slicing Sofia’s cheek. The heavy bronze bell broke free from its rotted timber mountings, plunging down through the floors below with a deafening, catastrophic roar.

"Go! Now!" Victor unhooked his leather belt, throwing it over the taut cable.

Sofia grabbed her own reinforced harness, looping it around the trembling wire. Below them, another barrage launched from the sea. Together, holding their breath against the biting gale, they kicked off the edge of the collapsing belfry and plunged into the abyss.
