Chapter 13

Part 14: The Trap That Looked Like an Inheritance

Sofia stared at the documents until the numbers blurred.

Hundreds of millions.

Investments.

Property holdings.

Accounts scattered across five countries.

All tied to the name she had been born with.

"Are you telling me I'm wealthy?"

Thomas shook his head.

"I'm telling you someone used your identity to hold assets they believed could never be connected to a living claimant."

Dr. Marsh added, "The trust was constructed so that a recognized beneficiary could demand an accounting.

Alexander believed that beneficiary would never appear publicly."

Sofia looked at her original birth certificate.

"Why not use a fake name?"

Thomas opened another file.

"Because some of the assets required an authorized royal beneficiary under the old Crown Trust Act.

Claire's child qualified.

Gabriel's unborn descendants did not yet satisfy the trust's documentation requirements."

"So they hid everything behind a baby's identity."

"Yes."

Sofia felt sick.

Her mother had spent years struggling to pay rent.

They had eaten canned soup for dinner.

Claire had patched winter coats rather than buying new ones.

All while Sofia's legal identity concealed a fortune.

"Did my mother know?"

"She suspected part of it.

She didn't discover the full structure before she fled."

Sofia closed the file.

"I don't want their money."

Thomas nodded.

"Then don't take it."

"Can I return it?"

"Not simply.

Some of it belongs to charities.

Some came from misappropriated public funds.

Some was invested legitimately after the original transfers."

Sofia thought of the hospitals that had lost funding.

The families harmed by political operations.

The people who had died.

"What happens if we expose it?"

"A court can freeze the accounts and appoint independent administrators."

"And the monarchy?"

Thomas looked at her carefully.

"It may not survive."

Sofia was silent.

Then she said, "Good."

Thomas almost smiled.

She didn't.

"I don't want to destroy a country," she continued.

"I want to stop people who think owning a palace gives them permission to destroy lives."

Dr. Marsh nodded.

"Then you need legal counsel."

Sofia looked at the documents.

"Someone outside the royal system."

Thomas handed her a card.

Evelyn Carter, Constitutional Attorney.

"Your mother contacted her years ago.

Evelyn refused to be intimidated."

"Why didn't Claire file the case?"

"She lacked some of the original records.

And she was protecting you."

Sofia looked at the card.

"For how long has Evelyn known?"

"She knew Claire claimed to possess evidence.

She didn't know the trust beneficiary was still alive."

Sofia picked up her phone.

"Then it's time she did."

Three hours later, Evelyn Carter entered a modest law office with a mountain of documents and the expression of someone who had been waiting twenty years for a phone call.

She was fifty-eight, with short dark hair, sharp eyes, and a reputation for suing institutions that considered themselves untouchable.

When Sofia showed her the birth certificate, Evelyn sat perfectly still.

Then she whispered, "Claire did it."

Sofia frowned.

"Did what?"

"She kept the evidence alive."

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

"And you kept your promise."

Thomas lowered his eyes.

Sofia glanced between them.

"You knew my mother?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I represented her during the first secret proceedings.

Before the accusations became public."

Sofia leaned forward.

"Did she tell you about Adrian Vale?"

"Yes."

"About Alexander?"

"Eventually."

"About Gabriel?"

"She believed he would choose the Crown over her.

She was right."

Evelyn opened her laptop.

"The documents you brought may support a constitutional petition.

But we need one more thing."

"What?"

"Independent proof that the declaration inside the Crystal Hand was properly executed."

"Madeleine witnessed it."

"Madeleine is implicated in the cover-up.

Her testimony will be challenged."

Sofia's shoulders sank.

"Then how do we prove it?"

Evelyn looked toward Thomas.

"King Alexander had an official Keeper of Seals."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Arthur Bellamy."

"He retired after Claire disappeared," Evelyn said.

"Most people believe he's dead."

Sofia felt her pulse quicken.

"Is he?"

May you like

Evelyn smiled for the first time.

"No."
