Chapter 31 - The Beacon in the Storm

The air inside the flooded tower was thick with the scent of ozone and imminent death. The tide surged higher, lifting floating driftwood and swirling around their knees in dark, icy whirlpools.
Victor did not drop his weapon. Instead, his eyes caught Sofia's in a fraction of a second—a shared lifetime of unspoken understanding forged in the fire of their palace trials.
"Sofia," Victor spoke softly, loud enough to cut through the howling storm outside. "Remember the second verse of her lullaby?"
Vance frowned, suspicion flashing across his scarred face. "Shoot them both—"
*“Now!”* Sofia screamed.
Instead of drawing her dagger, Sofia ripped a pouch of concentrated sulfur from Victor's belt and hurled it straight into the iron brazier at Vance's feet.
The chemical hit the glowing red coals and erupted into a blinding, deafening flash of white-hot phosphorus fire. A concussive blast blew through the chamber, accompanied by a thick, suffocating cloud of white smoke.
The crossbowmen fired blindly. Bolts ricocheted violently off the granite columns, sparking against stone. Vance let out a hideous scream as the blinding flare seared his eyes.
Victor moved with lethal efficiency. In the blinded haze, his crossbow cracked once, twice. Two guards collapsed into the churning sea water with silent splashes.
Sofia surged through the rising surf toward the third guard. When he lunged at her with a short spear, she ducked beneath the thrust, using the water's buoyancy to slide past his guard, driving the hilt of her silver dagger hard against his temple. The man crumpled.
"Sofia, the stairs!" Victor yelled, grabbing her arm through the smoke.
The tide had breached the main entrance; a massive wave slammed through the archway, sweeping debris across the floor. They scrambled toward the spiral stone staircase that led up into the belfry.
Behind them, Vance, his face blackened and blisters rising on his cheeks, dragged himself out of the water, coughing violently. "You cannot run from what's coming, Sofia! The Directorate knows where you are! Even if you kill me, the Fleet of the Iron Sun has already set sail!"
Victor turned on the first landing, his crossbow raised, aiming directly between the Chancellor’s eyes.
"Wait," Sofia commanded, her hand pressing down on Victor's bow arm.
Victor looked at her, astonished. "He's a viper, Sofia. He'll track us to the ends of the earth."
Sofia looked down at the pathetic, groveling architect of her family's misery. The water was rising rapidly, already reaching Vance’s chest. The tide would swallow the lower chamber in less than twenty minutes.
"Let the sea judge him," Sofia said, her voice chillingly calm. "The tide will rise. If his gods think his empire is worth saving, he can swim."
She turned and sprinted up the stairs with Victor, ascending higher into the howling darkness of the storm until they burst out onto the open platform of the belfry.
The wind nearly tore them off their feet. Rain lashed down like iron needles. From this height, looking out across the black, churning waters of the Sapphire Sea, Sofia felt Victor freeze beside her.
"Victor?" she asked, wiping sea spray from her eyes.
Victor was not looking down at the sandbar or the path back to the cottage. He was staring out toward the horizon.

Through the curtains of torrential rain, out on the dark open sea, dozens of glowing crimson lanterns flickered against the black waves. Massive war galleons, bearing the blackened sails of an invading armada, cut through the coastal fog, heading straight for the defenseless fishing shores of the realm.
The war was not over. It had only just begun.
