Chapter 10

Part 11: The Choice That Destroyed a Princess

Twenty-six years earlier, Jonathan Reed had been a young gardener with weathered hands and a smile that made Madeleine forget the rules governing her life.

She had met him beside the palace greenhouse, where she went to escape the pressure of her marriage.

He had treated her like a woman rather than a future queen.

They had fallen in love.

When Madeleine discovered she was pregnant, she confided in Claire.

Claire had embraced her.

"You deserve happiness," she had said.

But their secret didn't survive.

King Alexander discovered the affair.

He summoned Madeleine to his private office.

Gabriel stood beside him.

On the desk lay photographs of Jonathan.

And a document accusing him of stealing Crown property.

"Confess the affair," Alexander told her, "and the gardener goes to prison.

Remain silent, and he keeps his position."

Madeleine had understood the threat.

Alexander wanted something in return.

Her cooperation.

At the time, he was expanding the secret financial network that Claire had begun investigating.

Madeleine possessed access to charitable trust accounts established under her name.

Alexander required those accounts to disguise the transfers.

She signed.

Again.

And again.

Every signature became another chain.

Then Claire discovered the accounts.

She confronted Madeleine.

At first Madeleine denied everything.

But Claire had already gathered proof.

"You have to stop," Claire begged.

"People are being hurt."

Madeleine told her about Jonathan.

Claire promised to help.

She intended to confront Alexander and expose the whole operation.

Within days, Claire was accused of treason.

Madeleine discovered too late that her financial authorizations had been used to support the forged case.

"Gabriel told me if I spoke," she whispered, "Jonathan would be charged with espionage."

Sofia stared at her.

"So you let my mother disappear."

Madeleine's eyes filled.

"I helped her escape."

"After you helped them destroy her."

"Yes."

The word fell between them.

Victor stood abruptly.

"How did Jonathan die?"

Madeleine looked at him.

"He became ill."

"Mother."

She started crying.

"I don't know whether it was natural.

He suffered a stroke.

He died three days later.

Gabriel forbade an independent examination."

Victor turned away.

For the first time in his life, the prince looked as though the palace walls were closing around him.

Sofia watched Madeleine struggle to breathe.

Part of her wanted to hate this woman without complication.

Another part recognized the terror that could make someone surrender piece by piece until nothing remained.

But terror wasn't innocence.

"Did Claire forgive you?"

Madeleine wiped her cheeks.

"She said forgiveness belonged to the people I harmed."

Sofia looked down at the royal register.

Her mother had understood something the palace never had.

A crown could protect power.

It couldn't erase responsibility.

A guard knocked.

"Your Majesty, the king requests your presence."

Madeleine stiffened.

"Tell him I'm not coming."

"The king has ordered an immediate family council."

Victor looked toward the door.

"Tell him we're coming together."

Sofia turned to him.

"Victor—"

He met her gaze.

May you like

"No more private bargains."

For the first time, she believed he meant it.
