Chapter 43 - The Descent into the Maw

The auxiliary emergency lift had jammed halfway down the command superstructure, forcing them to navigate the spiraling iron catwalks of the central missile shaft. The ship was dying beneath their feet. Every pipe was venting superheated steam; every bulkhead shivered under the terrifying rumble of hull plates buckling against oceanic pressure.
Victor led the way, his sidearm drawn, moving with a limp that grew more pronounced with every step. Behind him walked Cassian, disarmed and pale, his hands bound with heavy electrical cable. Sofia brought up the rear, her eyes darting between her father’s rigid spine and the descending indicators on the bulkheads.
"Ventral Bay 04," Cassian said, pausing at an airlock wheel coated in heavy yellow grease. "The *Nautilus-IV* is docked behind this pressure seal. It's a deep-submergence diving bell constructed from cold-forged adamantine alloy. It was designed to carry the excavation vanguard into the high-pressure envelope of the Cradle."
"And if your engineers already fled in it?" Victor demanded, leveling his weapon at Cassian's temple as he prepared to turn the locking wheel.
"They didn't," Cassian replied coldly. "The launch sequence requires the master biometric signature of the Grand Marshal. They couldn't leave without me. Or rather... they didn't have the stomach to face what lies at the bottom."
Victor shoved the wheel. The heavy dogs rotated with a metallic thud, and the thick hatch swung open, releasing a cloud of chilled, pressurized nitrogen.
Inside the staging bay, suspended within a massive gantry of hydraulic dampeners, hung an iron sphere fifteen feet in diameter. It was ugly, industrial, and covered in high-density lead tiling, fitted with three thick quartz viewports that glowed amber under the emergency bulbs. Below the sphere, the bay floor had already been retracted; through the yawning opening, the foaming surface of the moonlit sea surged into the lower hull, threatening to swamp the launch deck.
"We have less than three minutes," Sofia said, checking the twin bracelet on her wrist. The obsidian band was no longer merely vibrating—it had begun to emit a rhythmic, high-pitched hum that set her teeth on edge. "The ring has crossed the six-thousand-meter threshold. If it hits the Cradle’s primary containment housing before we reach the manual release, the shockwave will generate a megatsunami that wipes out every settlement from here to the capital."
"Then get inside," Cassian muttered, stepping through the hatch of the sphere.
Sofia and Victor scrambled in behind him. The interior was cramped, smelling of ozone, stale rations, and machine oil. A circular control console dominated the center, surrounded by three bucket seats fitted with heavy pneumatic harnesses.
Victor slammed the thick hatch shut, spinning the dog wheel until the pressure seals hissed shut, cutting off the deafening roar of the dying dreadnought. Sofia strapped herself into the copilot's position, while Cassian pressed his right palm against the primary terminal's copper interface.
*IDENTITY VERIFIED: GRAND MARSHAL WARD,* the mechanical synthesized voice echoed from the sphere’s copper horn speakers. *COMMENCING VENTRAL LAUNCH SEQUENCE.*
Above them, the hydraulic clamps disengaged with a concussive bang.
For two agonizing seconds, Sofia felt the terrifying sensation of freefall. Then came the impact—a bone-shattering collision that violently slammed her against her safety harness as the *Nautilus-IV* plunged into the boiling black ocean.
The amber lighting in the sphere flickered, dying down to a dim, emergency crimson. Through the thick quartz portholes, the raging tempest vanished, replaced instantly by the suffocating, pitch-black silence of the deep abyss. Outside, millions of phosphorescent bubbles rushed past the glass as the heavy ballast tanks pulled them down at terrifying speed.

Above them, through the dorsal viewport, the dreadnought flagship was visible one final time: a fractured behemoth of burning iron, breaking in two against the surface swells, its fiery death throes swallowed by the unforgiving sea as it began its long, silent tumble into the grave behind them.
