Chapter 9 - whispers in the dark

The armored Maybach glided through the rain-slicked avenues of downtown Chicago, surrounded by two black SUVs moving in synchronized formation. Inside the soundproofed cabin, Clara studied Roman’s rigid silhouette. He had been on three encrypted satellite calls since they left the penthouse garage, his voice clipped, delivering razor-sharp commands to intelligence contacts scattered across London, Zurich, and New York. Clara was no fragile ornament; she had managed the multi-million-dollar Bennett Foundation with steely resolve and sharp intuition. She knew how power operated in the shadows, but whatever Roman was facing reached far beyond corporate warfare.

"Roman," she said, placing her warm hand over his clenched fist. "Stop shutting me out. If someone is targeting us because of your past, I deserve to know whose shadow we are standing in."

Roman slowly lowered the satellite phone, turning his intense gaze toward her. His thumb gently traced the knuckles of her hand, his expression torn between ruthless instinct and agonizing protectiveness. "Ten years ago, before I consolidated the family holdings and severed ties with the old syndicate, my father had a business partner named Gregory Vance. My uncle. He believed our empire should thrive on extortion, narcotics, and blood money. When my father died, Gregory tried to liquidate our legitimate assets to fund an international cartel. I stopped him. I took everything he owned, stripped his name from every charter, and handed his financial paper trail to federal prosecutors."

Clara leaned forward, piecing together the timeline. "You told me he died in a federal penitentiary."

"He did," Roman replied coldly, staring out into the gray rain. "Three years into his sentence, Gregory suffered a massive coronary in his cell. But he had a son. Julian Sterling. Julian took his mother’s maiden name and disappeared into private equity across Europe. He was brilliant, patient, and completely unhinged. If that antique key is in Chicago, it means Julian has finally decided to cash in his father’s grudge."

Before Clara could reply, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes. The heavy tires shrieked against the wet asphalt as the lead escort SUV was violently clipped by an unmarked delivery van barreling through an intersection. The Maybach spun sharply, coming to a halt against the curb as three dark sedans screeched to a halt, completely boxing their convoy into the narrow concrete underpass.
