Chapter 5 - The Wife's Restraint

Clara, holding the heavy black tuxedo jacket securely around her shredded dress, looked up into Roman's dark, furious eyes. She didn't look afraid of him; she looked at him with profound, grounding love.

"No threats, Roman..." Clara said in a soft, calm voice, her touch immediately halting his forward momentum. "Remember who you promised to be."

When they had married, Roman had promised Clara that he would strive to transition his empire into legitimate avenues, leaving behind the overt violence and ruthless destruction that had defined his past. He had promised to protect her, but also to respect her grace.

Roman looked down at his wife. The lethal, cold fury in his eyes softened just a fraction, melting into absolute devotion. He placed his large hand over hers, his thumb gently brushing her knuckles.

"She put her hands on you, Clara," Roman murmured, his voice tight with restrained anger.

"And she will face the consequences," Clara replied smoothly, turning her attention to Sloane and Nolan. Her dark eyes were intelligent, sharp, and utterly unbothered by the ripped silk hanging beneath Roman's jacket.

"You think a torn dress humiliates me, Sloane?" Clara asked, her voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom. "I built my catering company from nothing. I know the value of hard work. You only know the value of the credit cards your father pays for."

Clara turned to Nolan, her expression shifting into a mask of pure, professional authority. "Mr. Whitmore. The land your new fifty-million-dollar development is being built on is leased from the Bennett Foundation. My foundation."

Nolan’s jaw dropped open. He stared at Clara in absolute horror, realizing that his entire future wasn't just at the mercy of Roman's ports—it was entirely owned by the woman his girlfriend had just assaulted.
