Chapter 3 - The Dangerous Realization

Sloane’s aggressive finger hovered in mid-air, but her arrogant shout caught in her throat as she truly looked at the man standing before her.
The slicked-back dark hair. The custom black tuxedo. The cold, soulless eyes that had dismantled entire corporations and ruined powerful men without a second thought.
"Your... your wife?" Sloane stammered nervously, the color draining completely from her perfectly contoured face. She stumbled backward, her champagne gown rustling against the marble floor. "I thought she was staff! She was standing by the catering tables!"
Roman didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. He gently pulled Clara’s torn silver silk gown tighter beneath his heavy tuxedo jacket, his eyes narrowing into a terrifying mask of dangerous authority as he inspected a faint, angry red scratch on Clara’s bare shoulder where Sloane’s nails had caught her skin.
"You put your hands on the woman who owns half this city," Roman whispered. The quiet, deadly tone of his voice was far more terrifying than any shout.
The high-society guests surrounding them instinctively took two steps back, putting as much distance as possible between themselves and Sloane Harrington. No one dared to intervene. No one wanted to draw the wrath of Roman Raines.
