Chapter 1 - The Shredded Silk

The crystal chandeliers of the Ashford Grand Hotel ballroom cast a dazzling light over Chicago's wealthiest elites, but the glamorous atmosphere was violently shattered by the sound of tearing silk.
Sloane Harrington, a blonde socialite in a glittering backless champagne gown, aggressively grabbed the shoulder straps of Clara Bennett’s elegant silver evening gown. With a vicious, unprovoked yank, Sloane ripped the delicate fabric, shredding Clara's dress completely open from her shoulder down to her waist.
"You’re just a waitress! You don’t belong in this room!" Sloane shouted arrogantly, pointing an accusing finger at Clara's exposed shoulder as hundreds of tuxedo-clad guests watched in absolute, stunned silence.
Clara, her long wavy brunette hair falling over her shoulders, didn't scream or cry. She clutched the torn, frayed fabric against her chest, her dark eyes flashing with cold, unyielding resilience.
Before Sloane could hurl another insult, the heavy mahogany doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung open.
Roman Raines strode down the steps. The tall, sharp-jawed man wore a tailored black tuxedo with an open-collar black dress shirt, his very presence radiating a cold, lethal authority that made the room's temperature plummet.
Without breaking eye contact with Sloane, Roman gracefully draped his heavy black tuxedo jacket over Clara’s exposed, torn dress. He pulled her gently against his broad chest, his protective hold absolute.
