Chapter 15 - the embers of triumph

By dawn, news of the federal raid at the Drake Hotel had exploded across financial networks nationwide. The Sterling syndicate had been completely dismantled, its assets frozen under international sanctions, and every corrupt official Julian had bribed was rounded up in early-morning arrests. Once again, Chicago’s high society realized that crossed paths with Roman and Clara Vance meant total and irreversible annihilation.
Clara spent the afternoon at the Bennett Foundation headquarters, reviewing new grant allocations for urban educational initiatives that had been funded using the restitution seized from Whitmore Development's bankruptcy liquidation. The ballroom scandal that had started weeks ago was now viewed as a turning point for the city—the moment the old corrupt elite were purged to make way for genuine leadership.
As the sun began its descent behind the skyline, Roman arrived at her corner office unannounced. He dismissed her staff with a subtle nod, walking across the polished hardwood floor until he stood before her desk. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking less like a feared billionaire and more like the devoted partner who lived only to protect her peace.
"You should have seen the city council’s faces this morning," Roman said softly, a genuine smile breaking across his handsome features. "They voted unanimously to approve the Bennett Foundation’s community zoning expansion. You have completely transformed this city, Clara."
Clara leaned back in her leather executive chair, looking up at him with deep affection. "We did it together, Roman. Without your protection, I couldn't have executed the audit. Without my father's records, you would have had to spill blood to end this."

Roman reached down, intertwining his long fingers with hers, pulling her gently up from the chair and wrapping his strong arms around her waist. She leaned her head against his broad chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. For the first time in months, the air felt clean, untainted by threats, betrayal, or lingering shadows.
"Tonight, no security reports. No financial audits," Roman whispered into her hair, pressing a warm kiss to her temple. "Just dinner on the balcony, like we planned."
