Chapter 14 - the unraveling facade

Julian’s hands trembled against the edge of the dining table as he glared at the woman who had just dismantled his multi-million-dollar offshore network with a single keystroke. His arrogance had completely vanished, replaced by the cornered, rabid desperation of a spoiled predator who had never been told no. "Kill them," Julian whispered through gritted teeth, his eyes never leaving Clara.
Nobody moved.
Julian snapped his head toward his armed personal security detail standing along the walls. "I said kill them! Both of them! Right now!" he screamed, his voice cracking with humiliating hysteria.
A man stepped forward from the shadows near the entrance—not one of Julian's guards, but Marcus, the commander of Roman Vance's private security team. Behind Marcus stood six heavily armored federal agents in black tactical gear, accompanied by Chicago police detectives.
"Mr. Sterling," Marcus announced with cold professionalism, "your security personnel were placed under federal detention in the underground parking garage thirty minutes ago. The men standing around you are undercover federal marshals assigned to monitor your illegal wire transfers."
Julian stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he collided with the mahogany credenza behind him. His bespoke suit suddenly looked like a cheap costume. The illusion of his omnipotence had disintegrated into pathetic ruin before the very eyes of the couple he had intended to slaughter.
Roman stood up slowly, towering over the room. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. The raw physical authority he possessed commanded total, suffocating silence. He buttoned his jacket and walked toward Julian, stopping mere inches from the shivering heir.

"Your father died in a cage because he was arrogant and short-sighted," Roman whispered, his dark eyes burning into Julian's soul. "You will spend the rest of your life in an identical cage because you thought you could intimidate my wife. Take him away."
The federal marshals moved in with brutal efficiency, forcing Julian’s arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. As Julian was dragged out of the grand dining hall, screaming curses and spewing impotent threats, Clara rose gracefully from her chair, walking over to stand at Roman's side.
