Chapter 11 - an arrogant invitation

The penthouse was placed under total lockdown by midnight. Private tactical operatives patrolled the perimeter corridors while tech analysts swept every communication line for interception. Clara stood by the mahogany desk in Roman's private study, looking down at a dossier their security team had managed to compile within six frantic hours. Inside were photographs of Julian Sterling taken at private banking summits in Monaco, Zurich, and Singapore. He was thirty-five, impeccably groomed, with aristocratic cheekbones and eyes as cold and empty as arctic ice.

"He wants the Bennett Foundation's offshore endowment accounts," Clara said, her voice steady despite the lingering adrenaline in her veins. She had spent the last two hours auditing the cross-border transaction logs. "Two days before Nolan Whitmore humiliated himself at the gala, an offshore shell company tied to Julian purchased sixty percent of Whitmore Development's bad debt. Julian wasn't just watching from the sidelines; he was Nolan’s silent backer. When your eviction order ruined Nolan, you ruined Julian’s initial front."

Roman stepped behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders. His touch was warm, grounding her against the encroaching chaos. "Julian doesn't care about Nolan or real estate development. Nolan was just a clumsy puppet he used to test my defenses. Julian wants total retribution. He wants the Vance family empire burned to the ground, and he wants you broken to prove I couldn't protect what matters most to me."

"Then we don't play by his rules," Clara stated firmly, turning to look Roman directly in the eyes. Her gaze held no fear, only the sharp, unyielding defiance of a woman who refused to be treated as leverage. "He told you to come to the Drake Hotel alone. He expects you to react like an enraged predator, charging into an ambush to protect your wife."

"I am a predator, Clara," Roman murmured darkly, his fingers tightening gently over her shoulder.

"Yes, but you are also a strategist," Clara countered, tapping the open financial ledger on the desk. "Julian thinks his European accounts are untouchable because they sit behind Swiss privacy shields. What he doesn't know is that my late father spent twenty years as an international trade commissioner. I hold the original digital cryptographic keys to the Zurich clearinghouse Julian is using to launder his liquidity."

A slow, lethal smile touched the corners of Roman's lips. "You have access to his sovereign reserves."

"Not just access," Clara whispered, her eyes shining with quiet brilliance. "I have the power to freeze every cent he owns before he even orders dessert."
