Chapter 36 - the final ledger

Eleanor sneered, tapping the satellite terminal. "It’s already done, you fool. The offshore accounts in Panama and Grand Cayman have received the encrypted transfer. The bearer bond validation is complete. In three minutes, the automated distress signal will broadcast, reporting this freighter lost with all hands. A private chopper is touching down on the stern pad in sixty seconds."
"Check the transfer logs again, mother," Clara said quietly.
Eleanor’s cold smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What did you say?"
Clara pulled a small, bloodstained USB flash drive from inside Roman's jacket—the drive they had taken from Julian’s vault before the boathouse collapsed. "Julian thought he was clever hiding his own failsafe. But he was terrified of you. He kept the cryptographic override for your private offshore trusts stored on his personal server. The moment we tapped into the boathouse network, Roman's technicians mirrored the entire ledger."
Roman raised his wrist, tapping his encrypted comms unit. "Vance, execute the asset freeze."
Over the bridge speakers, an automated chime rang out from Eleanor’s satellite terminal. The red upload progress bar suddenly flashed bright amber, then flipped to an error code: *TRANSACTION ABORTED. ASSETS SEQUESTERED BY FEDERAL MARITIME AUTHORITY.*
Eleanor stared at the glowing screen. For the first time in forty years, the mask of supreme, untouchable elegance cracked. Her knuckles turned white around the pearl-handled derringer. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps.
"You ruined it," Eleanor whispered, her emerald eyes blazing with unbridled venom. "Forty years of planning... an empire built from nothing... you ruined it for a dead father's honor!"
"No," Clara said, walking directly toward the barrel of Eleanor’s gun without a single flinch. "I took back what belonged to the Sterling name. You were never a mother. You were just a thief in emerald silk."

Eleanor’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Before she could pull it, Roman closed the distance. His hand locked around her wrist, twisting with surgical force. The pearl-handled pistol clattered to the deck, sliding across the bloodied floor.
