Chapter 7 - The Mole

The morning after the attack, the mansion was a war zone of shattered glass and bullet holes.

Clara was in the medical suite, reviewing the inventory of supplies that had survived the chaos.

She picked up Victor's original medical chart, the one Dr. Aris had prepared before she arrived.

She flipped to the blood toxicology report.

She froze.

The numbers on the page didn't match the symptoms Victor had presented.

Dr. Aris hadn't just missed the poison.

He had actively altered the lab results to hide it.

Clara felt a cold chill run down her spine.

The Colombians hadn't poisoned Victor in a street fight.

Someone inside Victor's own circle had poisoned him, and Dr. Aris was covering their tracks.

The door to the suite opened.

Silas walked in, looking exhausted and covered in plaster dust.

"How is he?" Silas asked, leaning against the doorframe.

Clara looked at Silas, her mind racing.

Silas was Victor's right hand.

If there was a mole, it could be him.

She carefully closed the medical chart.

"He is resting," Clara lied smoothly.

"He needs quiet."

Silas nodded, his cold eyes scanning the room briefly before he turned to leave.

"I'm going to the city to track down Dr. Aris," Silas said casually over his shoulder.

"The boss wants to know why the good doctor missed the poison."

Clara watched Silas walk away.

If Silas was the traitor, Dr. Aris would never make it back to the mansion alive.

She had to tell Victor immediately.

She grabbed the chart and walked quickly down the hall toward Victor's private bedroom.

She knocked once and pushed the door open.

Victor was sitting on the edge of his massive bed, loading a fresh magazine into a matte-black pistol.

He looked up at her, his eyes dark and questioning.

"Aris didn't make a mistake," Clara said, walking over and tossing the chart onto his bed.

"He changed the lab results."

"Whoever poisoned you has Dr. Aris in their pocket."

Victor stared at the chart for a long moment.

A terrifying, icy calm settled over his features.

"I know," Victor said quietly.

Clara blinked in surprise.

"You know?"

May you like

"I've known since the night you saved me," Victor replied, racking the slide of his pistol with a sharp click.

"I just needed them to think they were succeeding so they would expose themselves completely."
