Chapter 13 - A Queen's Ultimatum

The morning sun cast a harsh, unforgiving light on the bullet holes scarring the clinic's exterior walls.
Victor had quadrupled the guard detail, turning the medical facility into an impenetrable fortress.
He was currently pacing the length of Clara's private office, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand despite the early hour.
"Alexei Volkov is a madman," Victor said, his voice laced with pure venom.
"He doesn't care about territory or money, he only cares about chaos."
Clara sat behind her mahogany desk, reviewing the toxicology reports from the previous night's attack.
"He wants to draw you out, Victor."
"He knows that attacking the clinic is the one thing that will make you abandon strategy for sheer rage."
Victor stopped pacing and looked at her, his eyes dark with a terrifying intensity.
"You are my only weakness, Clara."
"He knows that if he breaks you, he breaks the Kaine Syndicate."
Clara stood up, smoothing the front of her tailored pencil skirt.
She walked around the desk and took the whiskey glass out of his hand, setting it down on a nearby table.
"Then we have to show him that I am not a weakness."
"I am a weapon."
Victor frowned, his protective instincts instantly flaring up.
"What exactly are you suggesting?"
"The annual Mayor's Charity Gala is tonight at the Grand Continental Hotel," Clara said, picking up an embossed invitation from her desk.
"Alexei bought out the entire platinum VIP section."
"He plans to flaunt his untouchable status in front of the city's corrupt politicians."
"I forbid it," Victor said immediately, his voice leaving absolutely no room for argument.
"You are not walking into a room full of Russian killers."
Clara stepped closer, resting her hands flat against his broad, muscular chest.
"He expects you to come in with guns blazing, which is exactly why the police commissioner will have SWAT teams waiting to arrest you."
"But he doesn't expect me."
"I am just a doctor, Victor."
"Let me go in, deliver our terms, and show him that the Syndicate is not rattled by his parlor tricks."
Victor stared at her for a long, agonizing minute, the muscle in his jaw ticking furiously.
He hated the idea, but he knew she was absolutely right about the tactical advantage.
"Silas goes with you," Victor finally conceded, his hands gripping her waist possessively.
"And if anyone so much as looks at you the wrong way, I will burn the hotel to the ground with everyone inside."
That evening, Clara stepped out of a sleek black limousine wearing a blood-red silk gown that hugged every curve of her body.
The heavy platinum and diamond watch Victor had given her sparkled on her wrist, a clear symbol of her allegiance.
Silas walked half a step behind her, dressed in a sharp tuxedo that completely concealed the heavy weaponry he carried.
They walked into the glittering ballroom, ignoring the shocked whispers of the city's elite.
Clara bypassed the champagne flutes and walked directly toward the VIP velvet ropes.
A massive, scarred Russian guard stepped in her path, crossing his arms aggressively.
"Private area," the guard grunted.
"Tell Alexei Volkov that Dr. Hayes is here to write him a prescription," Clara said, her voice dripping with ice.
The guard hesitated, but a voice called out from the dark leather booths behind him.
"Let the beautiful doctor pass," Alexei Volkov purred, stepping into the light.
He was tall, blond, and possessed a chilling, reptilian smile that made Clara's skin crawl.
"I must admit, I expected Kaine to send bullets, not his future bride," Alexei mocked, gesturing for her to sit.
Clara remained standing, looking down at the Russian crime lord with absolute disdain.
"Victor doesn't negotiate with dead men, Alexei."
"I came here to tell you that the poison you pumped into my clinic was neutralized in ten minutes."
"Your men are dead, your supply lines are cut, and your chemical engineer gave us the location of your main lab before my fiancé ripped his tongue out."
Alexei's smile vanished instantly, his pale eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.
"You are playing a very dangerous game, little doctor."
Clara leaned forward slightly, resting her hands on the table and exposing the massive diamond on her ring finger.
"I don't play games, Alexei."

"Leave my city by sunrise, or I will personally harvest your organs for my transplant patients."
Without waiting for his response, Clara turned gracefully on her heel and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the Russian boss completely speechless.
