Chapter 22 - Blood in the Trenches

Seventy-two hours after the delivery of the severed finger, the Obsidian Commission made their first calculated strike.

It was neither an assassination attempt on Victor nor an assault on the Syndicate’s heavily fortified high-rise. They struck where they knew it would cut Clara the deepest: the community clinics and distribution hubs across the Narrows.

Sirens wailed in the drizzling afternoon mist as Victor’s armored Maybach cut through the rain-slicked asphalt of the lower district. The glass facade of Clara’s primary flagship clinic had been shattered into thousands of glistening shards. Smoke billowed from the second-story pharmacy, and emergency personnel were already struggling to contain the chaos.

Victor slammed the car door open, his long dark trench coat billowing behind him. Four black SUVs screeched to a halt around them, deploying a dozen heavily armed Syndicate enforcers who instantly formed a moving perimeter around Clara and Victor.

"Stay behind me, Clara," Victor ordered, racking the slide of his custom tactical shotgun.

"I have patients in there!" Clara snapped, not waiting for his permission. She grabbed her heavy trauma bag from the back seat and sprinted past the shattered glass doors.

"Dammit, Clara!" Victor roared, signaling Nikolai to flank her while he led three men into the smoldering corridor.

Inside, the scene was carnage. Civilian volunteers and off-duty Syndicate guards lay scattered along the linoleum floor. The attack had been precise: incendiary grenades thrown into medical storage, automatic gunfire aimed to disable, not necessarily to kill quickly, but to inflict agonizing suffering.

"Clara!" A familiar voice gasped from beneath an overturned reception counter.

Clara dropped to her knees. It was Elena, one of her chief surgical residents from the district hospital who had volunteered to run the free trauma ward. The young woman was clutching her abdomen, dark arterial blood pulsing between her fingers.

"Hold pressure, Elena! Don't you dare close your eyes," Clara commanded. Her hands moved with blinding speed, tearing open a pack of combat gauze and packing the wound directly. "Nikolai! Get me suction and a clamp from the crash cart in room three, now!"

Nikolai, a man who had killed dozens without blinking, scrambled to obey the tiny doctor, returning within seconds with the stainless-steel tray.

Gunfire suddenly erupted from the rear alleyway.

The glass ceiling panels rained down as automatic rounds tore through the drywall. Victor’s voice cut through the gunfire like a thunderclap.

"Target twelve o'clock! Flank them! No survivors!"

The deafening roar of Victor’s shotgun reverberated through the clinic walls, followed by the screams of hitmen realizing too late who was clearing the hallway. Victor advanced through the smoke like an elemental force of violence, eliminating every hostile shooter with brutal, rhythmic precision.

Beside Elena, Clara didn't flinch. While bullets chewed through the plaster above her head, her focus remained absolute. She located the bleeding vessel, clamped it shut with a crisp metallic click, and applied a hemostatic dressing.

"Vitals are stabilizing," Clara whispered, wiping sweat from her brow with her bloody forearm. "Nikolai, prep the back transport. Move her to the subterranean bunker at the manor."

As the gunfire ceased, a heavy silence fell over the destroyed clinic, punctuated only by the crackle of burning insulation.

Victor walked back into the triage area, his dark coat dusted with plaster and blood. In his hand, he dragged an injured mercenary by the collar, dropping the half-conscious man onto the floor before Clara.

The mercenary spat blood, coughing out a cruel laugh. "You... you can’t save them all, little girl. Vance... Roman Vance sends his regards. The city burns next."

Clara stood up slowly, her white doctor’s coat soaked in the blood of her colleagues. She didn't look away from the dying mercenary. She looked at Victor.

"Roman Vance," Clara said, her voice dropping into a chilling register. "The name mentioned in your father’s old ledgers."

Victor leaned down, pressing the smoking barrel of his weapon against the mercenary's temple. "Where is Vance hiding?"

"Go to hell, Kaine," the mercenary wheezed.

Clara stepped forward, her fingers picking up a long, sharp spinal needle from the tray. She knelt beside the man, her eyes completely devoid of warmth. "As a physician, I know every nerve cluster in the human body that transmits agony without causing unconsciousness. You have ten seconds to tell my husband where Roman Vance is, or I will demonstrate exactly what happens when you defile my hospital."

The mercenary stared into Clara's eyes and saw no mercy—only a cold, razor-sharp intellect that was infinitely more terrifying than Victor's brute force.

"The docks!" the man shrieked, breaking instantly. "Pier 44! A freighter coming from Marseilles... midnight!"

Victor looked at his wife, a dark, primal pride flaring behind his gray eyes. Without another word, he squeezed the trigger, ending the man's misery.

"Get the car," Victor commanded Nikolai, his eyes never leaving Clara. "We’re going hunting."
