Chapter 20 - The Platinum Crown

The wedding took place in the grand library of the Kaine estate, entirely sealed off from the outside world.
It was not a massive, ostentatious mafia affair.
It was intimate, heavily guarded, and perfect.
Thousands of white roses cascaded down the spiral staircases, filling the massive room with a sweet, intoxicating perfume.
A string quartet played softly in the corner, the music weaving through the rows of antique books.
Clara wore a stunning, long-sleeved gown made of delicate French lace, the train sweeping elegantly across the polished hardwood floor.
Her dark hair was pinned up in a loose chignon, adorned with tiny diamond pins that sparkled like stars.
Around her wrist, she wore the heavy platinum Patek Philippe watch.
It was the very first piece of his world she had ever touched, and she refused to walk down the aisle without it.
Silas, looking sharp in a custom black tuxedo and a subtle earpiece, escorted her down the makeshift aisle.
He offered her a reassuring, respectful nod before handing her over to the man waiting at the altar.
Victor stood there, looking like a dark, majestic king in his tailored midnight-blue tuxedo.
When he saw Clara, all the lethal hardness vanished from his face, replaced by an expression of absolute, undeniable worship.
He took her hands in his, his thumbs gently stroking her knuckles as the judge began the ceremony.
The vows they spoke were not traditional, flowery promises.
They were forged in blood, survival, and a fierce, unyielding loyalty.
"I promise to protect you against every monster in the dark," Victor swore, his deep voice carrying through the silent library.
"I promise to burn the world to ashes before I ever let you fall."
"You are my heart, my ghost, and my queen."
Clara looked up at him, her eyes completely clear and full of absolute certainty.
"I promise to heal your wounds and stand by your side in the fire," Clara vowed in return.
"I promise that no matter how dark the world gets, I will never let go of your hand."
Victor slid a heavy, diamond-encrusted platinum wedding band onto her finger, completely sealing his claim on her soul.
"I pronounce you husband and wife," the judge declared.
Victor didn't wait for permission to kiss the bride.
He pulled Clara flush against his chest, his mouth crushing down on hers with a passionate, possessive hunger that stole her breath completely.
The small gathering of loyal Syndicate members and clinic staff erupted into cheers and applause.
Later that evening, the estate grounds were lit up with thousands of fairy lights, the champagne flowing freely among the heavily armed guests.
Clara stood on the balcony of their master suite, looking out over the sprawling, snow-covered hills.
The city glowed in the distance, a sprawling metropolis that now belonged entirely to them.
She felt Victor’s strong arms wrap around her waist from behind, his solid chest pressing warmly against her back.
He rested his chin on her shoulder, looking out at their empire.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Kaine?" he asked softly, kissing the curve of her neck.
Clara leaned back into his embrace, her hand resting over his heart.
She thought about the terrifying night he had bled on her cheap linoleum floor.
She thought about the wars they had fought, the enemies they had buried, and the lives they were saving at the clinic.
She had charged him a hundred dollars to save his life, and in return, he had given her the entire world.
"I am exactly where I belong, Victor," Clara whispered into the cold night air.
The ghost of the Narrows was gone forever.
