Chapter 19 - Ashes of the Empire

The death of Alexei Volkov sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld of the entire eastern seaboard.
Without their leader, the remaining members of the Russian Bratva fractured and fled the city in total panic.
Victor did not show them a single ounce of mercy.
For the next two weeks, the Kaine Syndicate ruthlessly hunted down and eliminated every remaining trace of the Russian operation.
The message to the other crime families was loud, bloody, and absolutely clear: The Narrows belonged to Victor Kaine, and his queen was untouchable.
Clara sat in the sunny conservatory of the estate, sipping herbal tea and reviewing the blueprints for a new pediatric wing for the clinic.
Her neck still bore the faint, yellowish bruises from Alexei’s hands, a chilling reminder of how close she had come to death.
Silas walked into the room, his arm in a black sling but his posture as rigid and professional as ever.
"Good morning, Dr. Hayes," Silas greeted her, placing a thick leather binder on the glass table.
"Good morning, Silas," Clara smiled warmly.
"You are supposed to be on mandatory bed rest for another week."
Silas offered a rare, genuine smirk.
"The boss would drive me insane if I stayed in bed any longer."
"He asked me to deliver the final property deeds for the new clinic expansion."
"The land has been purchased cleanly, and the permits have been fast-tracked by the new, highly cooperative mayor."
Clara touched the leather binder, feeling a deep sense of pride.
Out of all the blood and violence, they were building something beautiful that would save thousands of lives.
Victor entered the conservatory, dressed in a casual black sweater that highlighted his broad, powerful shoulders.
He walked over to Clara, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her temple.
"Are you bothering my doctor, Silas?" Victor asked, though his tone was unusually light.
"Just delivering the paperwork, Boss," Silas replied, bowing his head slightly before exiting the room to give them privacy.
Victor pulled out a chair and sat next to Clara, his dark eyes tracing the fading bruises on her neck.
He reached out, his long fingers gently grazing the sensitive skin.
"I should have killed the traitor guards sooner," Victor murmured, the guilt still heavy in his voice.
"He should never have been able to get into that room."
Clara reached up, capturing his large hand and pressing it against her cheek.
"Victor, we survived."
"The war is over, the city is quiet, and the clinic is thriving."
"Stop blaming yourself for the actions of a dead madman."
Victor leaned in, capturing her lips in a slow, incredibly tender kiss that made her toes curl.
"You are too good for me, Clara Hayes."
"I am a violent man who lives in the shadows, and you are made of pure light."
Clara pulled back slightly, looking deeply into his intense, beautiful eyes.
"I used to live in the shadows, too, Victor."
"I patched up monsters in the dark because I was too afraid to fight for the light."
"You taught me how to fight back."
Victor smiled, a breathtaking expression that completely transformed his harsh features.
"Then I suppose we make a perfect team," he whispered.
He stood up, offering her his hand.
"Come with me."
"I have something I want to show you."
Clara took his hand, letting him lead her out of the conservatory and into the grand foyer of the mansion.
Sitting on the black marble table in the center of the room was a simple, elegant white envelope.
"What is this?" Clara asked, picking it up.
"Open it," Victor encouraged.
She slid her manicured finger under the flap and pulled out a thick, beautifully embossed piece of parchment.
It was a marriage license, already signed by a federal judge, leaving only their signatures blank.
"No more waiting," Victor declared, stepping close and wrapping his arms securely around her waist.
"I want to make you my wife this weekend."
Clara looked at the document, tears of pure joy welling in her eyes.
May you like
"Yes," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck.
"Absolutely yes."
