Chapter 27 - The Wolf’s Return

The cargo hold became a pressure cooker of life and death.
"Vance, drop the trigger!" Victor snarled, his rifle aimed directly at Roman’s head.
"Shoot me, boy!" Roman laughed, his thumb hovering millimeter away from the red trigger. "A dead man’s switch! My heart stops, the thermite charges blow the canisters, and twenty miles of this city become a mass grave!"
Clara’s hands didn't stop moving on the console. She kept typing, bypassing firewalls, rerouting nitrogen tubes with her left hand while her eyes tracked the digital readouts: *Temperature: 36°C... 37°C...*
"Victor," Clara said, her voice impossibly calm, cutting through the standoff. "The auxiliary hydraulic line above his head. Sever it."
Roman's eyes flicked upward for a fraction of a second.
That fraction of a second was all Victor Kaine needed.
Victor did not shoot Roman Vance. He fired a single round at the high-pressure hydraulic hoist suspended directly above Vance’s head. The hose ruptured, spraying scalding, pressurized industrial oil directly into Roman's face and eyes.
Roman shrieked in agony, dropping the detonator as the burning fluid blinded him.
In that same heartbeat, Victor moved like an unleashed tempest. He crossed the thirty-foot distance in a blur of violence, his combat boot slamming into Roman’s chest, sending the older man crashing backward into a stack of metal barrels. The detonator skittered across the diamond-plated floor.
Nikolai dove forward, securing the detonator and stomping his boot onto Vance’s right hand, shattering his wrist bones.
Meanwhile, Roman’s remaining bodyguards raised their weapons, but Victor was already upon them. It was not a gunfight; it was an execution. Victor disarmed the first with a savage twist of the wrist, using the man as a human shield before snapping his neck, then spun, drawing his combat knife and burying it into the collarbone of the second. Within twelve seconds, all four mercenaries were lifeless on the deck.
"Temperature 39°C!" Clara called out, her voice tight. "Victor, I need your strength! This valve is seized!"
Victor turned away from the carnage, sprinting to Clara's side. His hands, covered in blood, gripped the frozen manual bypass wheel beside hers.
"On three!" Clara instructed. "One... two... PULL!"
With a roar of raw, guttural power, Victor strained against the seized iron valve. The veins on his neck and temples bulged violently. With a deafening screech of grinding metal, the valve broke free, spinning into place.
A hiss of freezing white nitrogen vapor erupted from the safety nozzles, flooding the containment tanks.
The digital monitor flashed green: *TEMPERATURE STABILIZED: -15°C. CANISTERS SECURE.*
Clara collapsed back onto her heels, her chest heaving, her hands trembling slightly from the sheer adrenaline surge.
Victor dropped to his knees in front of her. He ignored the blood on his hands, ignored the dead bodies surrounding them, ignored the sirens wailing in the distance. He reached out and framed her face with his palms, his breathing ragged, his gray eyes burning with an intense, unbridled emotion that bordered on worship.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice shaking with rare, raw fear. "Clara, look at me. Did you get hit?"
Clara looked up into the face of the underworld’s most feared monster, seeing only a man terrified of losing her. She reached up, placing her smaller hands over his bloodstained ones.
"I’m whole, Victor," she whispered softly, leaning her forehead against his. "We did it. We saved them."
May you like
Victor pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest, burying his face in her hair as if trying to shield her from the very existence of darkness.
