Chapter 25 - The Poisoned Harvest

Midnight struck with the crash of torrential rain and violent thunder.

The harbor smelled of diesel, brine, and death. At Pier 44, the massive cargo vessel *The Iron Leviathan* sat moored against the concrete berths, its rusted hull illuminated by flickering sodium-arc work lights.

Victor, Clara, and a tactical strike team of twenty elite operators were concealed within the shadows of a stack of rusted shipping containers three hundred yards out. Clara wore night-vision optics and a tactical respiratory mask around her neck, her hands steady as she calibrated portable chemical sensors.

"Thermal scans confirm forty hostiles on the dock and another thirty on board the ship," Nikolai reported through the encrypted comms channel. "The crates from Montenegro are being loaded onto four heavy transport trucks."

"They're not just moving weapons," Clara said, staring at her tactical tablet connected to the drone surveillance feed. "Look at the containment units. Cylindrical lead-lined canisters with secondary cryo-cooling jackets. That’s VX-9 neurotoxin. One ruptured canister at a municipal water intake or ventilation grid would liquidate half the metropolitan population in under twenty minutes."

Victor’s jaw set into iron. "Roman isn't trying to control the city. He’s taking scorched-earth vengeance. If he can't rule it, he will burn it to ash."

"Victor," Clara said, gripping his tactical vest. "We cannot use heavy explosives near the cargo hold. If a stray fragment punctures a cryo-jacket, the toxin aerosolizes. We have to breach the ship, secure the canisters manually, and neutralize Vance’s extraction team with close-quarters engagement."

Victor looked at her, his protective instincts warring against cold reality. "You stay in the rear with the decontamination unit."

"I am the only one who knows how to disarm the electronic cryo-locks on those containers, Victor!" she insisted, her voice sharp as glass. "You fight. I disarm. We do this together or we don't do it at all."

Victor stared at her for a heartbeat, then grabbed her tactical helmet, pulling her forehead against his. "If anything happens to you, I will burn this entire continent until nothing remains."

"Then don't let anything happen to me," she whispered fiercely.

"Move out!" Victor commanded.

The Syndicate strike team moved like phantoms through the driving rain.

The initial breach was devastating. Suppressed gunfire whistled through the night as Vance’s perimeter sentries dropped into the freezing harbor water before they could raise the alarm. Victor moved at the point of the spear, his assault rifle barking in controlled, deadly bursts.

They reached the main cargo gangway of *The Iron Leviathan*. But just as the first team crossed the threshold into the cavernous hold, the blinding glare of stadium lights suddenly snapped on, drowning the entire pier in brutal, blinding white illumination.

A siren wailed deafeningly across the harbor.

"Ambush!" Nikolai shouted, shoving Victor behind an armored shipping stanchion just as heavy caliber machine-gun fire ripped through the deck, turning steel crates into shredded shrapnel.

From the bridge of the ship, Roman Vance’s voice crackled through the port's public address system, dripping with manic triumph.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Victor?! Did you think a street medic could outthink the Obsidian Commission? Welcome to your tomb, little Wolf!"
