Chapter 14 - The Viper in the Fold

The victory at the gala was short-lived.

Two days later, Clara received a frantic phone call from the city's central blood bank.

Every single pint of O-negative blood in the city’s emergency reserves had been contaminated with trace amounts of industrial bleach.

It was a calculated, devastating blow meant to paralyze the medical infrastructure of the entire city.

Clara slammed her fist onto her desk, furious at the sheer cowardice of the tactic.

"Alexei can't win a street war, so he's trying to cripple our ability to treat the wounded," Silas noted, standing by the window.

"The blood bank is a secure federal facility, Silas," Clara pointed out, pacing the room.

"The Bratva couldn't just walk in and tamper with the supply without inside help."

Victor entered the office, looking exhausted but incredibly dangerous.

"We found the leak," Victor announced, tossing a thick manila folder onto Clara's desk.

"It’s Councilman Davis."

"He sits on the hospital oversight board and has top-level security clearance for all medical storage facilities."

Clara opened the folder, looking at the surveillance photos of the distinguished politician accepting a briefcase full of cash from Alexei’s men.

"Davis has been leading the public crusade against gang violence," Clara said, disgusted by the hypocrisy.

"He's using his political platform to distract the public while he helps the Russians destroy us from the inside."

"I will have him killed tonight," Victor stated matter-of-factly.

"No," Clara interrupted, holding up a hand.

"If you kill a sitting city councilman, the FBI will flood the Narrows and shut down our entire operation."

"We have to destroy him without firing a single bullet."

Victor raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by the ruthless glint in his fiancée's eyes.

"What is your diagnosis, Doctor?" Victor asked softly.

Clara pulled up Davis’s confidential medical files on her encrypted computer terminal.

"Before I got my license back, I ran an underground clinic for people who couldn't afford to go to the hospital."

"Councilman Davis was one of my anonymous, high-paying clients."

Silas chuckled darkly from the corner of the room.

"What kind of secrets is the good councilman hiding?" Silas asked.

"He has a severe, chronic addiction to illegal synthetic opioids," Clara revealed, tapping the screen.

"I treated him for an overdose three years ago, and I kept his blood samples in my private, off-the-books storage."

"If those records and blood panels are leaked to the press, his career is over, and he will face federal prison for purchasing narcotics."

Victor smiled, a slow, predatory grin that made him look like the devil himself.

"You are absolutely terrifying, Clara."

"I love it."

"Silas, get me the editor of the city's largest newspaper on the phone immediately."

Within three hours, the scandalous medical records were anonymously delivered to every major news outlet in the state.

The media storm was instantaneous and absolutely devastating.

Councilman Davis was forced to resign by noon, and federal agents raided his home before the sun even set.

With his political cover completely destroyed, Alexei Volkov lost his strongest asset in the city.

Clara sat in her office, watching the breaking news coverage on the small television in the corner.

Victor walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You took down a corrupt empire with a single vial of blood," Victor murmured proudly.

"Sometimes, the pen and the scalpel are far deadlier than the sword," Clara replied, leaning back against his solid warmth.

"But Alexei is a wounded animal now, Victor."

"He is going to lash out with everything he has left."

Victor kissed the side of her neck, his voice dropping into a deadly, serious register.

"Let him try."

"I am ready to put this rabid dog down for good."
