Chapter 23 - Sins of the Patriarch

The storm battered the windows of the manor’s war room as tactical maps, satellite images, and shipping manifests were laid bare across the heavy oak table. The manor’s subterranean vault had been converted into an operational command center.
Victor stood at the head of the table, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark tribal and Nordic tattoos that wrapped around his muscular limbs. Beside him stood Clara, having showered and changed into tactical combat trousers, a dark Kevlar-weave vest, and her hair tied back in a severe, practical knot.
"Roman Vance isn't just an enemy, Clara," Victor said, tracing a finger across the blueprint of the northern shipping docks. "He was my father's right hand. Twenty years ago, when my father decided to clean up the Syndicate's methods—moving away from human trafficking and indiscriminate slaughter toward legitimate corporate monopolies—Vance rebelled."
"Your father exiled him," Clara deduced, leaning over the manifests. "He didn't kill him."
"A fatal mistake of sentimentality," Victor spat bitterly. "My father thought blood ties mattered. Vance fled to Eastern Europe, joining forces with the Obsidian Commission. For two decades, he has been building an army of discarded soldiers, cartels, and corrupt politicians. And now that my father is dead and I have consolidated the regional syndicate, Vance believes the city is ripe for a coup."
Nikolai stepped forward, tapping a screen displaying thermal imagery. "Pier 44 is completely secured by Vance’s private military contractors. They’re offloading heavy military-grade crates from the freighter *The Iron Leviathan*. Heavy automatic weapons, anti-tank munitions, and according to port manifests... pressurized bio-hazard canisters."
Clara’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Bio-hazard? What kind?"
"Unknown," Nikolai said grimly. "Manifest lists it as agricultural solvents, but the shipper is an off-the-grid chemical laboratory in Montenegro."
Clara turned to Victor, her voice taut with urgency. "If Vance is bringing biological contaminants or neurotoxins into the city harbor, he isn't looking to conquer your territory, Victor. He’s looking to purge it. He wants to wipe out our manpower and force martial law. The entire city will collapse."
Victor walked around the table, stopping inches from Clara. He reached up, cupping her cheek, his thumb gently smoothing over her jawline.
"I cannot allow you to come to the docks, Clara," he said softly, a rare vulnerability creeping through his steel facade. "This is not a clinic. This will be an execution ground. If I lose you, there is no empire left worth saving."
Clara grabbed his wrist, holding his hand against her face, her eyes fierce and unwavering.
"Did you marry a trophy, Victor Kaine? Did you marry a fragile flower to lock away in a silver cage while you die in the mud?"
Victor didn't flinch. "I married the only woman who ever saw my soul and chose to stay. I married my queen."
"Then treat me like your queen," she demanded, her voice ringing clear through the bunker. "You know tactics and warfare. But if those canisters leak, or if Vance uses chemical agents on your men, your soldiers will choke on their own lungs before they can fire a shot. You need a medical officer who understands chemical exposure, triage, and decontamination. You need me."
Victor searched her gaze for five agonizing seconds. He saw neither fear nor hesitation; he saw only the indomitable will of the woman who had dragged him back from the threshold of death.
A slow, lethal smile curved the corners of Victor's mouth.

"Nikolai," Victor commanded without breaking eye contact with Clara. "Issue her a suppressed MPX, level-four body armor, and prepare the tactical strike team. Tonight, we bury my father’s ghosts once and for all."
