Chapter 24 - The Masquerade of Wolves

Before Pier 44 could be burned to the ground, a mandatory precedent had to be honored under the ancient bylaws of the continental cartels: The neutral assembly of the Solstice Gala.
Held at the opulent Grand Bellagio Hotel in the city's diplomatic sector, the gala was a facade of high society where mob bosses, corrupt senators, and international warlords gathered beneath crystal chandeliers, dressed in black-tie tuxedos and designer silk gowns, pretending to be gentlemen while negotiating territorial borders.
If Victor and Clara failed to appear, the Syndicate would appear terrified, fractured, and vulnerable.
The double doors of the grand ballroom swung open, and the sea of guests fell dead silent.
Victor Kaine strode into the room looking like an emperor of the underworld. His midnight-black bespoke tuxedo tailored to perfection accentuated his broad shoulders and lethal physique. But all eyes immediately drifted to the woman on his arm.
Clara was breathtaking, radiant, and dangerous. She wore an emerald-green silk backless gown that hugged her curves like water, contrasting sharply with her pale, flawless skin. Around her neck was the Kaine heirloom—a necklace of raw platinum and blood-red rubies. Her hair cascaded in soft Hollywood waves, and her lips were painted a fierce crimson. Concealed beneath the heavy silk split of her gown, strapped securely against her inner thigh, was a ceramic combat blade.
"Smile, my love," Victor whispered, his lips brushing her ear as they descended the sweeping marble staircase. "Every vulture in this room is calculating how much meat is on our bones."
"Let them starve," Clara murmured back, raising her champagne glass with an effortless, regal grace that made several veteran syndicate capos avert their eyes in respect.
A tall, silver-haired man separated himself from the crowd near the private mezzanine. He moved with an aristocratic cadence, leaning on a cane tipped with a silver snakehead. His eyes were cold, predatory, and dead.
Roman Vance.
"Victor," Roman drawled, his voice carrying the smooth, cultured rasp of a seasoned viper. "Look at you. Wearing your father's suit, pretending you earned this kingdom. And this... this must be the little stray you found in the gutter."
The air in the room instantly turned to absolute ice. Several guests stepped backward, anticipating the immediate roar of gunshots.
Victor took a half-step forward, his eyes flashing like lightning, but Clara gently placed a gloved hand on his chest.
She turned to face Roman Vance, her posture immaculate, looking at him not with anger, but with cool, clinical pity.
"Mr. Vance, I presume," Clara spoke, her clear voice carrying effortlessly over the string quartet. "I’ve reviewed your medical history from the old Syndicate archives. Advanced hepatic cirrhosis, stage three vascular decay, and a severe calcium deficiency judging by the tremor in your right hand that you’re desperately trying to hide behind that cane."
Roman’s smug smirk froze. His fingers tightened involuntarily around the silver handle.
"You look remarkably frail for a man attempting to launch an empire," Clara continued, taking a slow, graceful step toward him. "A kingdom requires vitality, stamina, and vision. You smell like embalming fluid and desperation. If I were you, I would spend less time coveting my husband’s crown and more time seeking a liver donor. Though in this city... no one would waste an organ on a dead man walking."
A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathering of elite underworld figures. A young boss near the bar choked back a laugh.
Roman’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. "You arrogant little bitch—"
In a movement too fast for the human eye, Victor closed the distance. His hand shot out, clamping around Roman Vance’s throat with the force of an industrial hydraulic press, lifting the older man three inches off the polished marble floor.
Panic flared across the room as Roman’s bodyguards reached for their jackets. Instantly, twenty Syndicate operatives positioned around the mezzanine drew suppressed submachine guns, aiming directly at the heads of Vance’s men.
"Speak to my wife like that again," Victor whispered, his voice so quiet, so devoid of humanity that the entire ballroom seemed to tremble, "and I will tear your tongue from your throat and feed it to you before you hit the floor. The Solstice truce expires at midnight, Roman. Enjoy your remaining hours."
Victor dropped him like a sack of garbage. Roman crashed to the floor, gasping for breath, his dignity completely shattered.

Victor offered his arm to Clara. She took it with a serene, radiant smile, and together, the King and Queen of the Syndicate walked out of the ballroom, leaving an empire of wolves paralyzed in terror behind them.
