Chapter 9 - THE HEARING

The emergency hearing took place three days later.

Luciano arrived with his legal team, the trust records, the forged authorization, the residential placement packet, and the evidence recovered from the blue ledger.

Adrian arrived with two attorneys and a confident smile.

He claimed he had been advising Celina on a possible family arrangement and had never intended to take control of the estate.

His lawyers argued that Luciano's public confrontation, canceled wedding, and emotional reaction raised questions about his judgment.

Luciano listened without interrupting.

Then his attorney presented the documents.

The enrollment packet had been submitted without Luciano's authorization. The medical assessment had been issued without an examination. The proposed guardianship petition contained claims that were inconsistent with school records and testimony from Ellie’s regular caregiver.

The financial institution also confirmed that the attempted loan application had been suspended because the trust document's authenticity and the applicant's authority could not be verified.

Finally, Celina provided a statement acknowledging that she had participated in planning Ellie's relocation and had expected to seek temporary administrative authority.

She also supplied communications linking Adrian to the arrangement.

Adrian's expression changed.

“This is a vindictive family dispute,” he snapped.

The judge ordered him to stop interrupting.

After reviewing the preliminary evidence, the court declined to grant the requested guardianship changes and imposed safeguards while the broader dispute continued.

Ellie's trust remained in place.

Luciano remained her guardian.

Adrian left the courthouse surrounded by attorneys and reporters.

Celina sat alone on a bench.

Luciano approached her.

“Why did you do it?” she whispered.

“You know why.”

She shook her head.

“I thought if I could just get past the wedding, everything would work out.”

“That's what people say when they believe other people's lives are things they can rearrange.”

He walked away.

At home, Ellie ran into his arms.

“Daddy, am I staying here?”

Luciano knelt and held her close.

“Yes. This is your home.”

She began to cry against his shoulder.

“I thought you were going to let them take me.”

His heart broke.

“I should have noticed sooner. I'm sorry.”

Ellie wrapped her little arms around his neck.

“Can we put Mommy's picture back in my room?”

“Of course.”

That evening, Marianne helped Ellie repair her family project.

They taped the torn portrait together, carefully smoothing the creases.

The paper remained damaged, but the faces were still visible.

For the first time in days, Ellie smiled.

Luciano thought the nightmare might finally be ending.

Then Richard called.

The investigators had found a new document among Adrian's records.

It was a transfer agreement dated several months before Celina met Luciano.

And it carried Isabella's signature.

How could a woman who had been dead for two years have signed a document that might change everything?
