Chapter 4 - THE LETTER FROM THE DEAD

Luciano waited until Ellie was asleep before opening Isabella's letter.

The envelope had been sealed for nearly three years.

Inside was a handwritten note and a small flash drive.

Richard stood beside the desk while Luciano read.

My love, if you're reading this, someone has decided that Ellie is more valuable as an obstacle removed than as a child protected.

Luciano's hands began to shake.

Isabella had written that she trusted him completely, but she feared the estate would attract people who saw Ellie as a legal complication rather than a human being.

She had instructed Richard to preserve evidence of any attempt to manipulate guardianship.

The letter contained one final warning.

If a future partner pressures you to separate Ellie from her home, do not dismiss it as jealousy. Find out what they stand to gain.

Luciano looked up.

“Did Isabella know Celina?”

Richard hesitated.

“They met twice at a charity fundraiser. Isabella asked me afterward to review some public records concerning Celina's previous business partnership.”

“What did you find?”

“An investment dispute. Nothing that established wrongdoing. Isabella never explained her concern.”

Luciano plugged in the flash drive.

It contained scanned documents, old emails, and a short video recorded by Isabella.

Her face appeared on the screen, pale but determined.

“If you're watching this, I hope I'm wrong about everything,” she said. “But I need you to remember that love should never require you to make your child smaller so another person can feel bigger.”

Luciano closed his eyes.

He remembered the promises he had made Isabella in the hospital.

He had promised to protect Ellie.

And somehow, while trying to rebuild his own life, he had allowed someone to make his daughter afraid of her own home.

The video continued.

“There's one more thing. I discovered that someone had been asking questions about Ellie's trust before Celina became part of our lives. I couldn't establish who was behind it. Richard has the relevant records.”

Luciano turned toward the attorney.

“You knew about this?”

“I knew Isabella had raised a concern. I never found conclusive evidence linking it to Celina.”

“Then we find it now.”

The next morning, Luciano canceled all wedding preparations pending an investigation.

Celina responded by calling every family member she could reach.

By noon, rumors were spreading that Luciano had become unstable with grief and was being manipulated by his late wife's relatives.

By evening, his uncle called to demand an explanation.

“Do you realize what canceling this wedding will do to the family?”

Luciano looked at Ellie, who was coloring quietly at the dining table.

“Yes,” he said. “It might finally make them understand that my daughter is not negotiable.”

Then Richard called with a discovery.

The company that had arranged Ellie's residential placement was owned by a holding company linked to Celina's former business partner.
