Chapter 38 - The Edge of Oblivion

The rain poured relentlessly from the black sky, washing the blood from the cracked pavement of the alley.

Clara lay curled around her daughter, using her own body as a human shield against the falling bricks and shattered glass. The baby was crying, terrified by the thunderous destruction, but she was unharmed.

Clara slowly pushed herself up with her uninjured arm, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps.

"Julian?" she called out, panic rising in her throat as she looked through the swirling smoke. "Julian!"

Ten yards away, Julian lay pinned beneath a heavy section of fallen iron scaffolding. A jagged piece of twisted metal had pierced through his right thigh, pinning him to the ground, while a heavy concrete beam rested squarely across his lower abdomen. Blood was pooling beneath him, rapidly mixing with the rainwater.

"Clara..." Julian choked out, his face pale as death, his teeth gritted in sheer agony as he tried to pry the beam off with his bare hands. "Get... get out of here... the gas mains... they're about to blow..."

"No! I'm getting you out!" Clara scrambled across the wet gravel, dropping to her knees beside him, shifting her baby to one arm while her bleeding, shattered shoulder screamed in protest as she tried to lift the concrete block. "Constance! Help me! Help me lift it!"

Constance stepped out of the smoke.

She wasn't running. She wasn't reaching down to help.

She stood at the mouth of the alleyway, looking down at Julian, then at Clara, her expression completely detached, cold, and calculating.

In her right hand, Constance was no longer holding a weapon meant for defense. She held a heavy, silenced Walther PPK, aimed steadily at Julian’s head.

And stepping out of the shadows behind Constance, completely unharmed, flanked by four heavily armed operatives wearing the private insignia of the Geneva banking consortium... was someone Clara knew intimately.

It was Salieri’s younger brother—Matteo—the financial director who managed the family’s international wealth.

"Constance... what are you doing?" Clara froze, her heart stopping dead in her chest, the cold rain soaking her face. "Constance, he’s dying! Help him!"

"Julian is a brilliant commander, Clara," Constance said, her voice completely devoid of the maternal warmth she had shown an hour ago. It was the voice of the true Matriarch—a woman who had ruled the underworld for forty years through unyielding, sociopathic pragmatism. "Too brilliant. Too proud. And unfortunately for him, he has never understood the fundamental law of the Valente family."

"Which is?" Clara whispered, horror chilling her to the bone.

"There can only ever be one master," Constance stated coldly. "Luciano was right about one thing: the Ledger of the Damned only unlocks with the DNA of a child, and the iron hand of an undisputed Matriarch. Julian was a necessary weapon to cleanse the board of my husband. But Julian would never allow me to raise this child in the old ways. He would want peace. He would want you to run away to the countryside."

Constance took a step closer, the barrel of the gun never wavering from Julian’s temple.

"And peace," Constance hissed, "is bad for business."

"You set this entire night up..." Julian coughed, dark blood spewing from his lips, his hand reaching for his empty holster. "You knew Luciano was awake... you used us to draw him out and slaughter his loyalists..."

"Of course I did," Constance smiled faintly. "A queen does not share her crown with a king. She outlives him."

Clara stood up slowly, her baby clutched against her chest, her Glock raised with her single good arm, pointing the iron sights directly between Constance’s eyes.

"You touch him," Clara whispered, her voice vibrating with a terrifying, deadly resonance, "and I will paint this alley with your brains."

"You won't shoot your own grandmother, Clara," Constance said softly, taking another step forward. "Because if you kill me, Matteo triggers the remote dead-man's switch on the child’s biometric tracker, and every dirty cop in this city will swarm this alley in sixty seconds to take her into state custody forever."

High above them, from the shattered roof of the burning foundry, a severed high-voltage power transformer groaned, snapping its heavy iron cables.

A shower of electrical sparks rained down over the alley.

Matteo raised his submachine gun, aiming it at Clara.

Julian’s hand suddenly closed around the combat knife still sheathed at his ankle.

And in the distance, the wailing sirens of twenty armored police vehicles began to echo down the boulevard, drawing closer by the second.

Constance cocked the hammer of her pistol.

"Give me the child, Clara," Constance commanded. "Or watch your husband die first."
