Chapter 30 - Ashes of the Sanctuary

The black Maybach tore through the wrought-iron gates of the Valente estate at ninety miles an hour, the tires screaming as Julian threw the heavy sedan into a power slide across the crushed limestone courtyard.

The scene before them was pure butchery.

The heavy steel blast doors of the main courtyard hung crooked from their reinforced hinges, peeled open by shaped thermite charges that were still sizzling in the pouring rain. Four of Julian’s elite perimeter guards lay face down in pools of water tinged crimson, their weapons spent, brass casings glittering like lost coins around their bodies.

Clara didn't wait for the car to come to a complete halt. She kicked her door open and hit the wet gravel running, her bare feet cutting against the sharp stones, her gown soaked and heavy with mud.

"Salieri!" she screamed into the smoldering dark, her voice breaking against the thunder. "Salieri!"

Julian caught up to her, his assault rifle raised to his shoulder, sweeping the smoking entryway with his tactical light. "Clara, stay behind me! The structure isn't cleared!"

"Get out of my way!" she snarled, shoving his barrel aside with an animalistic fury that shocked even him. She burst through the ruined foyer. The crystal chandelier that had hung in the grand hall for over a century lay shattered across the floor, its glass shards crunching beneath their boots.

They raced up the grand sweeping staircase, following a trail of blood that dragged heavily toward the private living quarters. The air grew thicker, choked with the smell of scorched plaster, cordite, and copper.

At the threshold of the reinforced nursery, the door was riddled with dozens of heavy-caliber holes.

Slumped against the white wainscoting was Salieri. His tactical vest was shredded, soaked through with dark arterial blood, his hands trembling as he clutched a combat knife buried deep into the chest of a masked assassin pinned beneath him.

"Salieri!" Julian dropped to his knees, his hands instantly pressing down on the sucking chest wound near his lieutenant’s collarbone. "Hold on, brother. Look at me. Keep your eyes on me!"

Salieri coughed, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. His clouded eyes flicked toward Clara, tears cutting through the soot on his cheeks. "Boss... Donna Clara... I tried..."

"Where is she?" Clara whispered, her world narrowing into a suffocating tunnel. "Where is the baby?"

"Old man... Luciano..." Salieri wheezed, his fingers clawing weakly at Julian’s sleeve. "He didn't come to kill her... He took her... Said she was the true blood... Said the matriarch’s empire would die with the child..."

Salieri’s head lolled back against the wall. His breath rattled once, twice, and then went entirely still.

Julian’s jaw tightened until the muscles threatened to snap. He reached out with two fingers, gently closing Salieri’s staring eyes. "Rest, soldier."

Clara walked past them, her movements robotic, hollow, as if her soul had detached from her flesh. She pushed open the door to the nursery.

The soft pink crib sat untouched in the center of the devastation. But the silk sheets were empty. Scrawled across the pristine white wall above the crib, painted in the fresh, hot blood of her slaughtered guards, was a single sentence:

*THE BLOOD RETURNS TO THE ROOT. MIDNIGHT AT THE FOUNDRY, OR HER THROAT PAYS THE DEBT.*

Constance stepped into the room, her silhouette framed by the flickering shadows of the corridor fire. The matriarch looked at the blood on the wall, her face suddenly aging twenty years in the span of five seconds. Her hand, which had remained steady while firing into a firing squad ten minutes ago, began to tremble uncontrollably.

"He wants the vault," Constance whispered, her voice hollow, stripped of all its terrifying authority. "It was never about revenge. It was about the Ledger of the Damned."

Clara spun around, her eyes burning with an unholy fire that made even Constance take a half-step back.

"You knew," Clara said, her voice deadly, cold as absolute zero. "You knew he was alive. And you knew he was coming for my daughter."
