Chapter 19 - The Shadow at the Gates

The morning sun had barely crested the manicured hedges of the Vance estate when the silence was fractured by the shrill ring of the secure perimeter gate.

Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master study, the heavy gold-crested Vance signet ring resting cool against her skin. Over the past twenty-four hours, the grand banquet hall had cleared, the scent of vintage champagne had faded, and the forty elite capos who had pledged their loyalty had dispersed across the city. Beside her, Julian stood with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, sipping black coffee, his eyes dark with the quiet exhaustion of a man who knew peace in their world was only ever an illusion.

"Delivery at the outer checkpoint, Boss," Salieri’s voice crackled through the intercom, tense and devoid of its usual jovial cadence. "Unmarked black courier. He didn't drop it. He detonated his own vehicle the moment our scouts approached."

Julian set his cup down with a sharp click against the marble desk. "Casualties?"

"None. Our boys were thirty yards out. But he left a titanium dispatch case chained to the front iron gates. It’s addressed to Lady Constance Vance. And to Mrs. Clara Vance."

Ten minutes later, the reinforced case sat atop the long oak table in the lower tactical chamber. Constance arrived wearing an ivory cashmere wrap over a charcoal silk suit, her silver hair coiled into an immaculate, razor-sharp twist. Her face showed no fear, only the icy, calculating fury that had kept her alive through half a century of underworld slaughter.

EOD technicians scanned the lock, nodding once to confirm it was free of explosive residue. Salieri severed the reinforced steel hinges with a diamond-blade cutter.

The lid swung open.

Nestled inside crimson velvet was a single, shattered sapphire brooch—intricately carved into the shape of a crowned viper. Beneath it lay a heavy brass bullet dipped in black wax, engraved with three Roman numerals: *VII*.

The moment Constance’s gaze fell upon the viper, the color drained from her lips, replaced by a ghostliness Clara had never seen in the matriarch before.

"The Council of Seven," Constance whispered, her knuckles whitening as her hand gripped the edge of the table. "They swore they would remain in the shadows of the Mediterranean as long as I breathed."

"Who are they, Constance?" Clara stepped forward, her voice low, measured, and resolute. She did not flinch from the sight of the bullet. She placed a comforting yet firm hand upon Constance’s shoulder.

Constance looked at Clara, her fierce eyes flickering with a mixture of dread and ancient rage. "Before Julian was born, before my husband died, the Vance empire did not rule alone. We were part of an international blood syndicate. When I consolidated power thirty years ago, I burned their emissaries and banished their bloodline from our shores. They called it a truce. But that brooch belonged to Don Vincent Moretti—the man who butchered my father."

Julian’s jaw clenched, a cord of muscle ticking along his neck. "Moretti is dead. You buried him yourself, Mother."

"Yes," Constance replied, her gaze fixed on the shattered stone. "Which means whoever sent this is not seeking territory, Julian. They are seeking extinction."

Before Julian could answer, the security screens lining the wall flickered violently, cutting to black, replaced by a single line of blood-red text that made Clara’s breath hitch:
