Chapter 20 - Skeletons in Venetian Marble

The tactical briefing room felt like a fortress under siege. Armed sentries stood at every threshold, and the air was thick with the scent of ozone and gun oil.
Julian had immediately placed the entire Vance syndicate on condition red. Three hundred soldiers were mobilized across the five boroughs; every port, warehouse, and private airstrip under the family's control was locked down tight.
Yet Clara refused to sit in an armored safe room like a trophy in a vault.
"If this Council operates internationally, they won't hit us with brute force first," Clara said, pacing the length of the digital war map projected across the wall. She pointed a manicured finger at the financial conduits lighting up the Atlantic corridor. "They will choke our supply lines. They sent the brooch to terrify you, Constance. It’s psychological warfare. If they wanted you dead this morning, that courier wouldn’t have blown up his car at the gate—he would have driven a semi-truck loaded with C4 into the manor."
Constance leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, a slow, predatory gleam replacing the initial shock in her eyes. "She’s right, Julian. The Moretti bloodline never strikes blindly. They play the long game of humiliation before the blade strikes the heart."
"Salieri just intercepted an emergency feed from the harbor," Julian said, his phone pressed to his ear, his voice darkening with every syllable. "A container ship carrying four hundred million dollars in rare industrial metals and Vance-backed pharmaceutical patents just entered international waters off Pier 42. Harbor control just had its communication transponders wiped. Someone hijacked the dockside grid."
"That shipment represents half our liquid collateral for the upcoming quarter," Constance noted coldly. "Without it, our creditors in Zurich and London will initiate margin calls. Our empire would be bankrupted before a single shot is fired."
"Then I’m going to the docks," Julian said, pulling a custom matte-black Sig Sauer from the lockbox beneath the console and checking the slide with practiced ease. "I'll take twenty men. We take Pier 42 back before the Coast Guard gets bribed into impounding the vessel."
"No," Clara said firmly, stepping directly into his path.
Julian stopped, his eyes locking onto hers, filled with protective desperation. "Clara, this isn't a board meeting. It's a bloodbath waiting to happen."
"And that is exactly why you cannot walk into the mouth of their trap alone," Clara countered, stepping so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. Her emerald eyes blazed with the sovereign authority Constance had bestowed upon her. "They left the message for *both* of us, Julian. If you go charging into Pier 42 without cutting off their communications hub first, you are walking into an ambush designed to leave me a widow and this family without an heir."
Constance stood up slowly, tapping her silver-tipped cane against the floor. The sound cracked like a gunshot through the room.

"Listen to your wife, Julian," the matriarch said softly, a ferocious smile touching her lips. "A boss does not rush into darkness because an enemy lit a match. A boss sets the entire forest ablaze so the enemy has nowhere left to hide."
