Chapter 28 - The Clock Strikes Midnight

A stunned, terrified silence gripped the grand cathedral. Not a single don dared to move. Even Vittorio’s calculating gray eyes flickered with genuine dread at the sheer, unbridled authority radiating from the young woman standing before them.

Clara’s challenge hung in the air like a poised executioner's blade. Julian moved up to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her, his hand resting on the grip of his concealed firearm, while Constance took her place on Clara’s other flank, a matriarch surveying a kingdom on the brink of war.

"The bloodline is verified," Vittorio said through clenched teeth, his pride visibly bruised as he glanced at the silent, intimidated syndicate lords in the pews. "By the ancient laws of the Council, the Valente claim is legitimate. The house of Vance remains recognized under the sovereign protection of the treaty."

A collective breath hissed out of the assembled capos. For a single heartbeat, it seemed as though Clara’s sheer audacity had won the day without firing a shot.

Julian let out a slow, cautious breath, reaching out to gently touch the small of Clara’s back. "You did it," he whispered. "We won."

Clara looked at him, but her instincts—honed by a lifetime of danger—screamed that the victory was far too easy.

Suddenly, high above them, the heavy iron bells of the cathedral’s bell tower began to toll in a rapid, frantic rhythm.

*GONG. GONG. GONG.*

"Midnight," Vittorio whispered, a sudden, horrifying smile spreading across his pale lips. "The treaty protects the daughter of Valente... but the treaty says nothing about ghosts."

*CRACK!*

A deafening explosion blew the high stained-glass dome directly above the altar into a million jagged shards of falling crystal.

Red laser sights rained down from the shattered rafters, bathing Clara, Julian, and Constance in a crossfire of crimson dots.

Before Julian could draw his weapon, the cathedral’s ancient pipe organ groaned to life, playing a single, haunting chord that vibrated through the floorboards. Over the cathedral's public address system, a voice crackled through the static—a voice that was deep, raspy, and dripped with decades of buried hatred.

Constance gasped, stumbling backward, her face twisting into sheer horror. "No... it’s impossible... you died thirty years ago..."

"Hello, Constance," the voice purred from the speakers, dripping with sadistic pleasure. "Did you really think the sea would keep my bones forever?"

At that exact second, Julian’s tactical radio hissed to life with Salieri’s voice, panicking and broken:

"Boss! Clara! The nursery! The inner sanctuary at the estate—they bypassed the blast doors! There's an army inside the house! They've taken—"

A deafening gunshot echoed over the radio, followed by static.

High above the altar, a cloaked figure stepped onto the ruined edge of the shattered catwalk, holding a detonator switch in one hand and a gold-plated revolver in the other, aiming directly at Clara’s heart.

"Welcome home, granddaughter," the man whispered.

The hammer clicked back.
