Chapter 37 - The Price of the Crown

Clara hauled herself onto the dry concrete, shivering violently, her uniform soaked in blood and brackish water. Her left arm hung limp at her side, the flesh around her shoulder torn open and throbbing with agony.
"Clara!"
Julian was beside her in an instant. He dropped to his knees, gently transferring the crying baby into her good right arm.
The moment Clara felt the soft, warm weight of her daughter against her chest, the pain, the cold, the exhaustion—everything vanished. She pulled the infant tightly against her neck, burying her face in the baby’s damp blanket, weeping silently as the little girl’s cries began to soften, recognizing the scent of her mother.
"She’s safe," Julian breathed, his forehead resting gently against Clara’s. His hands were covered in soot and blood, but his touch was impossibly tender. "She’s whole. You saved her, Clara."
"We saved her," Clara whispered, her voice cracked and raw.
Behind them, Constance walked up to the edge of the pit. She looked down at the swirling red water where Luciano had vanished. Her face was an unreadable mask of stone, but her shoulders, for the first time in Clara’s memory, seemed to drop an inch. The ghost that had haunted her for three decades had finally been laid to rest.
"It’s over," Constance said softly, tucking her empty pistols back into their holsters. "The ledger is safe. The faction will bend the knee. Tomorrow, the High Commission will acknowledge Clara as the sole legitimate heir to the Valente throne."
Suddenly, the floor beneath their boots trembled violently.
A low, deep groan reverberated through the ancient foundations of the foundry.
Julian’s head snapped up, his tactical instincts instantly flaring back to life. "What was that?"
Across the dry-dock, the satellite terminal wired to the titanium travel case was flashing frantically. A digital countdown timer on the screen was glowing amber, rapidly counting down from thirty seconds.
*00:29... 00:28... 00:27...*
"The detonator wasn't the only trigger," Julian said, his blood running cold. "The satellite link... it was on a dead-man's switch tied to Luciano’s biometric vitals. His heart stopped beating—the secondary sequence just initiated!"
"Julian, where are the charges?!" Clara cried, scrambling to her feet while clutching her baby tightly against her chest.
"Everywhere," Constance said, looking up at the massive steel girders holding up the roof of the entire industrial complex. "The central columns. The floodgates. This whole sector is going into the ocean."
"Run!" Julian roared.
They sprinted toward the narrow emergency stairwell leading to the street-level exit.
Behind them, the first series of explosions detonated deep within the drainage tunnels. The concrete floor cracked open like an eggshell, geysers of boiling industrial water and fire erupting into the air. Steel beams groaned, snapping like toothpicks under thousands of tons of structural pressure.
They hit the exterior metal doors, bursting out into the torrential rain of the alleyway just as the entire rear half of the Venetian Foundry collapsed into the canal in a thunderous roar of fire, twisting iron, and collapsing masonry.

A shockwave of heat and flying debris slammed into them from behind, throwing all three of them hard onto the wet asphalt.
