Chapter 27 - The Gathering of Wolves

The revelation shattered the foundations of everything Clara believed about herself. She was not a victim of cruel circumstance, not merely a street-smart survivor elevated by a wealthy family. She was the rightful heir to the oldest, deadliest criminal syndicate in Europe.
And now, the wolves were gathering to eliminate the threat she posed.
Within three hours, an encrypted diplomatic summons arrived via high-priority satellite link. The five regional heads of the North American mafia families, alongside three high envoys of the Council of Seven, had established an emergency tribunal at the St. Jude Cathedral—a neutral, consecrated sanctuary on the border of New Jersey that had served as the underworld’s highest court for over a century.
The message was clear: Clara Vance was summoned to present herself before the tribunal to verify her lineage, or the Vance family would be declared rogue and systematically exterminated by a joint coalition of twelve crime syndicates.
"We don't go," Julian said furiously, pacing the floor of the underground war room. "It’s a slaughterhouse. They have the home-field advantage."
"If we don't go, we confirm their accusation that we are hiding behind stolen power," Clara stated, her voice having hardened into cold, unbreakable diamond.
She stood before the mirror, dressing in a sharp, bespoke three-piece charcoal suit, pinning the Vance crest to her lapel alongside a small silver viper pin Constance had retrieved from the vault—the signet of House Valente.
"Clara is right," Constance said, her arm strapped into a black tactical sling. "In the underworld, an unanswered summons is a confession of weakness. But we do not go as supplicants. We go as kings."
At noon, a convoy of eight black armored SUVs pulled up before the towering gothic spires of St. Jude Cathedral.
Over fifty heavily armed guards from rival syndicates lined the stone steps, their submachine guns resting openly against their chests. The air smelled of incense and impending death.
Julian took Clara’s hand, his fingers intertwining tightly with hers. "Whatever happens in there, Clara... you are my wife. My co-ruler. I will burn this city to ash before I let them take you."
"Then let's make sure they know who the fire belongs to," Clara smiled coldly.
Together, flanking Constance Vance, they walked up the cathedral steps and pushed open the massive oak doors.
Inside, beneath towering vaulted ceilings and blood-red stained glass, thirty syndicate bosses sat in carved wooden pews. At the altar stood three figures cloaked in dark, tailored European overcoats—the High Envoys of the Council of Seven.
At their center stood a tall, gaunt man with piercing gray eyes and a silver cane: Cardinal Don Vittorio, the supreme judge of the Council.
"Clara of the gutter," Vittorio’s voice echoed like thunder off the cathedral stones. "You stand accused of harboring stolen royal blood and usurping the sovereignty of the Council. Kneel before this court, or be condemned where you stand!"
Clara didn't flinch. She released Julian's hand, walked alone down the center aisle, her heels clicking sharply against the sacred marble, until she stood ten feet from the altar.
She looked Vittorio dead in the eye, raised her right hand, and displayed both the Vance signet and the Valente viper ring.

"I kneel to no man," Clara proclaimed, her voice ringing with breathtaking, sovereign fury that silenced every don in the cathedral. "I am Clara Vance, daughter of Alessandra Valente, and co-head of the Vance dynasty. If any man in this sanctuary thinks he is worthy to take this throne from me, step forward now and draw your steel!"
