Chapter 23 - A Viper in High Silk

Dawn broke gray and somber over the Vance estate. The bodies had been cleared, the glass swept, and Julian had returned from Pier 42 with five captured operatives and the cargo secured.
When Julian entered the grand foyer and saw Clara standing unharmed—her clothes smeared with light plaster dust, the Vance ring gleaming on her hand—he pulled her into an embrace so fierce it knocked the breath from her lungs.
"Never again," Julian whispered hoarsely against her hair. "I will never leave you behind again."
"I wasn't behind you, Julian," Clara murmured, kissing his neck softly before pulling back to meet his gaze. "I was guarding your back. And we found something on the strike team's leader."
She led Julian and Constance to the study table. Laid out was an encrypted electronic keycard bearing the emblem of the *St. Regis Sovereign Club*—an ultra-exclusive private members' club in the heart of Manhattan where the world's most untouchable oligarchs, politicians, and syndicates laundered both their money and their reputations.
"The gala of the Winter Equinox is tonight," Constance remarked, tracing the gold foil on the card with her fingernail. "Every corrupt titan on the eastern seaboard will be there. And more importantly, the host is Lady Elena Moretti."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "Vincent Moretti’s legitimate daughter. She poses as an international philanthropist and art dealer."
"She’s the money laundering wing of the Council of Seven," Clara said, having already cross-referenced Elena’s corporate shell companies with Vance financial records. "She financed the mercenaries. She financed the dock hijack. And she expects us to be either dead, hiding, or begging for a ceasefire."
"Then we will give her an answer," Constance declared, her voice ringing with sovereign pride. "We will attend the gala. Clara, you will wear your finest diamonds. Julian, wear your dress tuxedo. We will not sneak through her back doors. We will walk through the grand entrance, let the world see that the house of Vance is unbroken, and cut the head off this viper in front of her peers."
Hours later, the St. Regis ballroom was a sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and glittering chandeliers. The elite of high society sipped vintage champagne, whispering rumors of the overnight violence in the outer boroughs.
Suddenly, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung wide.
The chamber fell dead silent.
Flanked by six towering security guards in bespoke charcoal suits, Constance Vance entered, radiant and regal in royal violet velvet.
Beside her walked Julian, imposing and lethal, his eyes scanning the room like a predator marking prey.
And walking arm-in-arm with Julian, commanding the absolute center of gravity, was Clara.
She wore a breathtaking, midnight-black backless silk gown that clung to her curves, slit high along the left thigh. On her finger, the Vance signet ring caught the chandelier light with brilliant arrogance. She wore no mask of fear, no hesitation—only the sovereign, lethal elegance of an empress who had conquered death and smiled.
Across the room, standing atop a small dais of marble stairs, Lady Elena Moretti froze, her champagne flute trembling in her crimson-tipped fingers.

Clara met Elena’s gaze from forty feet away, lifted her chin with cool defiance, and offered a terrifyingly sweet, predatory smile.
