Chapter 33 - The Eternal Sanctuary

The final weeks of the year slipped by in a peaceful, orderly rhythm of winter preparations, quiet evenings, and deep, restorative sleep.

On New Year’s Eve, instead of traveling or hosting a large gathering, David and I chose to celebrate quietly at home. We cooked a simple, delicious meal together, listening to jazz records on the stereo while the snow began to drift down softly outside the windows, turning the world into a silent, beautiful wonderland of white.

As the digital clock on the kitchen microwave ticked closer to midnight—11:58... 11:59... 12:00—we stood together by the large front window, looking out across our open, unobstructed driveway where the falling snow danced under the soft glow of the porch light.

There were no gates. There were no guards. There were no hidden vaults or lingering threats.

The past was a closed book, its accounts settled in full, its dark secrets locked away forever in federal archives where they belonged. The road ahead of us was wide, sunlit, and boundless.

David wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as we watched the gentle snowflakes drift down from the dark sky.

"Happy New Year, my love," David whispered softly against my hair.

"Happy New Year, David," I replied, my voice steady, clear, and filled with absolute peace.

We had survived the storm. And the light had won completely.
