Chapter 24 - Inside the Arraignment Room

The courtroom of U.S. District Judge Harrison was packed to capacity, the air thick with the hushed murmurs of reporters, legal analysts, and federal prosecutors. The oak paneling gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, and the electric tension in the room was palpable.

Jonathan sat at the defense table flanked by two high-priced criminal defense attorneys flown in from Washington D.C., their briefcases open and overflowing with legal motions. Jonathan looked composed now, his expression carefully neutered of emotion as he whispered instructions to his lead counsel.

When Judge Harrison entered, the courtroom rose in unison.

"United States versus Jonathan Vance," the clerk announced crisply.

The charges were read aloud—twenty-two counts of federal wire fraud, racketeering, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Each count carried potential prison sentences ranging from ten to twenty years. If convicted on all charges, Jonathan was looking at the rest of his natural life behind federal bars.

"How does the defendant plead to the counts in the indictment, Counselor?" Judge Harrison asked, looking down from the bench over his half-moon reading glasses.

Jonathan’s lead attorney stood up, smoothing his tie. "Not guilty on all counts, Your Honor. Furthermore, we are filing an immediate motion for pre-trial release on a secured bond, citing our client's deep ties to the community and lack of flight risk."

Before Jonathan’s attorney could finish his speech, Assistant U.S. Attorney Sterling (no relation, though the coincidence always drew murmurs in the gallery) stood up with a heavy stack of evidentiary files.

"Your Honor, the government strongly opposes pre-trial release," the prosecutor stated firmly. "As demonstrated in our emergency exhibits, the defendant possesses active offshore financial conduits, encrypted communication relays, and demonstrated capability to subvert legal and administrative processes through intimidation and proxy agents. He is a severe flight risk and an immediate threat to the integrity of ongoing investigations."

Judge Harrison listened intently, flipping through the prosecutor's exhibits before resting his gaze squarely on Jonathan sitting at the defense table.

"Motion for pre-trial release is denied," Judge Harrison ruled with absolute finality, bringing his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "The defendant shall be remanded to federal custody without bond pending trial."

A collective gasp rippled through the press gallery. Jonathan’s face finally cracked, a flash of genuine panic flickering across his eyes as the reality of his confinement locked around him.
