Chapter 10 - The Empty Table

The drive back to our home was quiet, save for the soft hum of the car’s heater and the gentle rhythm of Lily’s breathing as she finally fell asleep in her car seat in the back. The red handprint on her cheek was already beginning to fade under the soothing ointment I had applied before we left, but the emotional scar of what had happened would take time to heal.

When we pulled into our driveway, our modern, warm home was waiting for us—peaceful, secure, and far removed from the toxic web of the Hayes family estate.

David carried Lily upstairs into her bedroom, gently tucking her beneath her favorite floral quilt and placing her stuffed rabbit beside her. He leaned down and kissed her forehead with infinite gentleness. "Sleep tight, my brave girl," he whispered.

Downstairs in the kitchen, I poured two glasses of water, my hands still shaking with residual adrenaline. David walked in, loosening his tie and sighing deeply as he leaned against the granite counter.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his dark eyes filled with genuine concern.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for twenty years. "I feel... terrified. And relieved. For the first time in my life, I don't feel guilty. I spent my whole life thinking if I just tried harder, Mom would love me the way she loved Amanda. But she never loved Amanda either. She just loved the reflection of her own vanity."

David wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into his chest. "You protected our daughter tonight. You broke the cycle, Sarah. That takes more courage than anything else in this world."

We stood there in the quiet kitchen, holding each other, finally letting the poison of Thanksgiving wash away. It felt like the nightmare was over. The police had Amanda in custody. The house was secured. Mom was neutralized. We had won our freedom, and tomorrow we would start fresh, just the three of us.

We turned off the kitchen lights and walked upstairs to our bedroom, ready to put this harrowing day behind us forever.
