Chapter 29 - The Summer Solstice Gathering

June brought the summer solstice—the longest day of the year, bathing the valley in golden sunlight that lingered until late evening. To celebrate both the turn of the season and our permanent, unhindered freedom, we decided to host a small, intimate dinner party on the back patio for our closest friends.
Marcus Vance made the journey down from his new home on the coast of Maine, bringing jars of fresh sea salt and endless stories about coastal life. Sarah Miller, our trusted friend from the municipal records office, joined us with her husband, and a handful of local neighbors rounded out the table.
The patio was strung with delicate fairy lights that flickered to life as the sun dipped below the western hills, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and amber.
As we sat around the rustic wooden table sharing roasted lamb, garden vegetables, and artisan wine, Marcus raised his glass.
"To new beginnings," Marcus toasted, his eyes bright behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "To letting go of the past, cleaning the slate, and remembering that truth always outlasts deceit."

"To new beginnings," we all echoed, clinking our glasses together in a joyous, ringing chorus that drifted out into the quiet night air.
There was no talk of federal indictments, no whispered warnings about corporate raiders, and no shadows lingering at the edge of the property. There was only good food, shared laughter, deep conversation, and the warm, unbreakable bond of true friendship.
