Chapter 11 - The Midnight Knock

It was exactly 2:14 AM when the peace shattered.
A sudden, sharp vibration on the bedside nightstand startled me awake. David rolled over, blinking groggily as he reached for his phone. The screen cast a stark white glow across his face. It was an urgent notification from our home security system: *Motion detected at the front gate.*
"Is it a raccoon?" I asked, sitting up and pulling the blanket to my chin, a sudden cold chill creeping into the room.
David swiped to open the live camera feed. His body went instantly rigid.
"David? What is it?"
He didn't answer. He zoomed in on the high-definition infrared footage of our long private driveway.
Standing beneath the perimeter streetlights wasn't Amanda—she was locked safely in county holding. It wasn't my mother, who didn't even know the passcodes to our neighborhood.
It was an unmarked black sedan idling with its headlights turned off. And standing right beside our front security keypad was a tall, imposing man in a charcoal suit—a man we both recognized immediately.
It was Jonathan Vance.
David’s estranged older brother. The brilliant senior partner of the state’s most ruthless corporate defense firm—a man David hadn't spoken to in over seven years following a bitter falling-out over their family's tech inheritance.
David's phone suddenly rang in his hand. The caller ID flashed with a number marked *UNKNOWN*.
David pressed accept and put it on speaker, his voice tight. "Jonathan. What the hell are you doing at my gate at two in the morning?"
A calm, chillingly familiar voice chuckled through the speaker, accompanied by the distinct sound of a lighter clicking open.
"Hello, little brother," Jonathan drawled smoothly. "You really should be more careful when you file corporate forensic subpoenas through the state registry. Did you really think your little sister-in-law was smart enough to set up offshore Delaware shell companies and forge county deeds all on her own?"
My breath caught in my throat. I looked at David, whose knuckles had turned white around the phone.

"What did you do, Jonathan?" David growled, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and realization.
"Amanda didn't work for herself, David. She worked for me," Jonathan said calmly through the receiver, as the loud, metallic *CLANG* of our front driveway gates being manually overridden echoed through the quiet night. "You took something of mine seven years ago. Tonight, you handed me the legal leverage to take everything you own. Open the front door, David. We have business to finish."
