Chapter 21 - The Unraveling of the Firm

The federal marshals didn't enter with drawn weapons or aggressive postures; they moved with the quiet, terrifying calm of men delivering an inevitability. The lead agent, a silver-haired woman named Special Agent Vance (no relation to Jonathan or Marcus, as she dryly noted upon introducing herself), stepped into the foyer and opened her leather portfolio.
"Mr. Sterling, Ms. Sterling," Agent Vance greeted us professionally. "I assume you weren't expecting company quite this early, but developments overnight accelerated our timeline."
"What kind of developments?" David asked, gesturing for them to take a seat in the study.
"At 4:00 AM, our financial crimes unit executed a preemptive search warrant on Jonathan Vance’s primary residence and his executive suites at Vance & Sterling LLP," Agent Vance explained, sliding a multi-page federal indictment document across the mahogany table. "We found shredders running overtime. We also found active wire transfers linking Jonathan’s personal Swiss accounts directly to Amanda’s secret Delaware proxy entities."
I looked down at the document. The charges were staggering: wire fraud, suborning perjury, interstate extortion, and systematic obstruction of justice.
"He didn't cover his tracks," I noted, a mixture of disbelief and disgust washing over me. "Jonathan is supposed to be a brilliant legal mind. How did he leave such a glaring paper trail?"
"Arrogance, Ms. Sterling," Agent Vance answered without missing a beat. "When you spend decades winning civil suits through intimidation and out-resourcing opponents, you stop believing that federal investigators know how to follow digital currency. He thought Amanda would take the fall entirely if she was caught, and that his corporate firewall would protect him. He didn't count on you having an uncorrupted cryptographic backup of the home network."

"When does he answer for this?" David asked, his jaw tightening.
"Federal magistrate signed the arrest warrant an hour ago," Agent Vance said, standing up and buttoning her suit jacket. "By noon today, Jonathan Vance will be sitting in the exact same holding facility where Amanda is currently wondering why her brilliant boss stopped answering her phone calls."
