Chapter 6 - The Council of Vipers

By five-thirty that afternoon, the atmosphere inside the mansion transformed into a suffocating pressure cooker.
The romantic champagne lighting of the courtyard was replaced by the harsh, clinical illumination of the grand subterranean boardroom beneath the estate. This was the nerve center of the Brooks Syndicate—a soundproof, blast-shielded chamber with a massive mahogany table capable of seating twenty people, surrounded by wall-mounted monitors displaying live feeds of border checkpoints, shipping docks, and financial tickers.
Mrs. Gable had taken Noah and Lily back up to the west wing suite, locking the heavy doors and placing four armed guards outside their room.
I stood beside Nathan in his private dressing room adjacent to the boardroom. He was strapping a shoulder holster over his crisp white dress shirt, sliding a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol into the leather sheath before putting his suit jacket back on.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Emily?" Nathan asked, turning to face me as he adjusted his cuffs. "You don't have to be in that room. You can stay upstairs with the kids."
I stepped up to him, reaching out to smooth the lapels of his jacket, my fingers brushing against the hard steel of his holster beneath the fabric.
"We made a deal, Nathan," I said firmly, looking straight into his dark eyes. "I promised to appear beside you when necessary. If your family needs to see a united front to protect this house and keep my children safe, then I am sitting right next to you."
A slow, dark smile touched the corner of Nathan’s lips—a look of fierce, unadulterated pride. "You truly are a marvel, Mrs. Brooks."
At precisely six o'clock, the heavy steel doors of the boardroom swung open.
The regional syndicate leaders—the capos, the border brokers, the financial launderers, and the extended family elders—filed into the room. They were tough, dangerous, hard-faced men in expensive suits, their eyes sharp and calculating.
Leading the delegation was Marcus Brooks—Nathan’s uncle.
Marcus was a man in his late fifties, tall and lean, with silvering slicked-back hair, a thin mustache, and cold, predatory gray eyes that smelled of betrayal. He carried himself with the arrogant swagger of a man who believed he was about to inherit an empire.
Behind Marcus walked six heavy-set lieutenants, their hands resting near their jacket buttons.
Nathan sat at the head of the mahogany table, occupying a massive leather armchair. I sat directly to his right, my spine straight, my champagne silk dress radiating an aura of cold, aristocratic elegance. Standing behind our chairs were Marco, Leo, and eight of Nathan’s elite tactical guards, their submachine guns held at low-ready positions.
Marcus stopped at the opposite end of the table, his cold eyes sweeping over the room before landing on me with sneering condescension.
"What is this, Nathan?" Marcus sneered, his voice raspy and grating. "An executive council meeting or a tea party? Why is there a woman sitting at the tribunal table?"
The room fell dead silent. Several of the regional capos exchanged tense, uneasy glances.
Nathan didn't move a muscle. He slowly rested his elbows on the armrests of his chair, lacing his long fingers together over his chest.
"You are speaking to my wife, Marcus," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that vibrated through the floorboards. "Show her respect, or I will have Marco remove your tongue in front of this table."
Marcus blinked, a sudden flicker of shock passing across his face before he forced a mocking laugh. "Your wife? Don't make me laugh, boy! You picked up some broke homeless stray off the side of Highway 86 yesterday afternoon! My men tracked your convoy! You think this pathetic, desperate theater is going to fool the council?"
Marcus slammed a thick leather folder onto the center of the mahogany table.
"Under Section Four of the Brooks Family Foundation Charter," Marcus barked, looking around at the assembled regional leaders, "a leader who attempts to fake a domestic household to prevent territorial redistribution forfeits his executive veto! I move for an immediate vote of no confidence! Nathan is unfit, unmarried by legitimate bloodline, and trying to pass off a pauper as a Brooks matriarch!"
A tense murmur rippled through the room. Two of the older capos shifted uncomfortably in their seats, looking between Marcus and Nathan.
I felt a cold surge of calm wash over my body. The fear that had plagued me for months vanished, replaced by an ancient, fierce maternal instinct. These men were threatening my children's safety. They were threatening the man who had pulled us out of the dust.
Before Nathan could speak, I stood up slowly.
The smooth, effortless rustle of my silk dress echoed through the quiet room. I didn't yell. I didn't falter. I stepped out from behind the table and walked slowly down the length of the mahogany board, my high heels clicking against the marble floor with lethal precision.
Marcus glared at me as I approached, his jaw clenching. "Sit down, girl—"
"My name is Emily Brooks," I cut him off, my voice ringing out like a silver bell, crystal clear and commanding absolute attention.
I stopped three feet away from Marcus, staring straight into his predatory gray eyes, allowing him to see the absolute lack of fear in my expression.
"You call me a pauper, Marcus," I said calmly, crossing my arms over my chest. "You call me desperate. You are right about one thing: I know what it means to have nothing. I know what it means to stand in the freezing dark with empty pockets, willing to bleed to protect the people I love."
I leaned in slightly, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried to every corner of the room.
"That makes me infinitely more dangerous than an arrogant, greedy old man who has lived his entire life sucking off the blood and hard work of his nephew," I spat softly. "Nathan didn't pick me up to fool you, Marcus. He married me because I am the only person in this room who understands the true value of an empire—and the absolute brutality required to defend it."
I turned my back on Marcus, looking directly at the assembled regional capos around the table.
"The legal marriage certificates were filed with the Pima County Court at two-fifteen today," I announced firmly. "The original Brooks charter is fully satisfied. Nathan holds undisputed executive authority. And if any man at this table wishes to challenge his wife..."
I looked back over my shoulder at Nathan, who was watching me with a look of such fierce, unadulterated adoration and pride that it felt like a physical heat.
"...my husband will gladly execute you right here on this floor," I finished softly.
A heavy, breathless silence descended over the boardroom.
The regional capos stared at me, thoroughly stunned by the absolute authority and raw power radiating from the woman they had assumed was a weak pawn. One by one, the older capos bowed their heads in silent deference.
"The charter is satisfied," the oldest capo sitting near the center declared firmly. "Nathan holds the chair. The vote is canceled."
Marcus’s face turned purple with blind, murderous rage. His hands shook as he realized his coup had collapsed into dust before it even began.
"You bitch," Marcus hissed, his hand instinctively twitching toward the inner pocket of his jacket—
CRACK.
Before Marcus’s fingers could even touch his coat, Nathan was across the room.
The movement was a terrifying blur of speed and lethal violence. Nathan grabbed Marcus by the throat, slamming his broad frame against the reinforced glass wall of the boardroom with enough force to crack the soundproof pane.
Nathan’s silver pistol was pressed hard beneath Marcus’s chin, pushing his head upward at a violent angle.
"Touch my wife again," Nathan growled, his voice a guttural, terrifying roar that shook the very foundation of the room, "and I won't just kill you, Marcus. I will erase your entire name from the family records. Do you understand me?"
Marcus choked, his eyes bulging with terror, his hands clawing helplessly at Nathan’s iron grip on his neck. "Yes... yes..." he wheezed.
Nathan threw him to the floor like a sack of trash. "Get him out of my sight," Nathan commanded coldly. "He is stripped of his territories and banished from Arizona. If he sets foot in this state after midnight, shoot him on sight."
Marco and three guards instantly dragged the whimpering, broken uncle out of the boardroom.

Nathan turned back to the remaining syndicate leaders, adjusting his tie, his posture cold and majestic once more. "The meeting is adjourned. Return to your territories."
The capos stood up quickly, bowing their heads respectfully to Nathan—and then, with deep, solemn respect, bowing their heads to me—before quietly exiting the room.
