Chapter 12 - THE PERSON WATCHING THE CHILDREN

The woman had left before security arrived.

The school had not released Caleb.

That was the only fact Mara cared about during the twenty-minute drive.

When she reached the office, Caleb was sitting beside the principal eating crackers.

He looked embarrassed.

“Mom, I’m fine.”

Mara hugged him anyway.

The receptionist described the woman.

Late fifties.

Gray-blond hair.

Large sunglasses.

Polite.

“She knew his birth date,” the receptionist said.

Mara looked at Caleb.

“She knew my dad’s name too.”

Mara’s ex-husband, Daniel Bennett, had been gone for sixteen months.

Not dead.

Gone.

He had drained their savings after his contracting business collapsed, disappeared into Nevada, and sent exactly three messages since.

Mara called him from the parking lot.

For the first time in seven months, he answered.

“What?”

“Did you send someone to Caleb’s school?”

Silence.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

“She knew his birthday.”

Another pause.

Then Daniel said something Mara had never heard from him before.

Fear.

“Where are you living?”

“Why?”

“Just answer me.”

“No.”

“Mara, listen to me. Has anybody contacted you about money?”

Her grip tightened around the phone.

“What money?”

Daniel disconnected.

She called again.

Straight to voicemail.

That evening, Adrian listened while Mara explained.

He did not interrupt.

Then he asked, “Did Daniel ever know my family?”

“No.”

“Business connection?”

“No.”

Mara stopped.

Unless.

Years earlier, Daniel had done subcontracting work around Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Luxury homes.

Commercial remodels.

Estate renovations.

She opened an old cloud folder on her laptop.

Invoices.

Tax returns.

Job summaries.

She searched “Cole.”

Nothing.

Then “Ellison.”

One result.

Ellison Management Properties — renovation — 2019.

Adrian leaned closer.

“Grant?”

“I don’t know.”

The invoice was for $84,600.

Daniel’s company had been paid through a management company.

Mara scrolled further.

Another document.

A work order.

Location: a private residence north of Tucson.

The dates matched the period after Elena disappeared.

Adrian went still.

“What?”

He took the laptop.

“I know that address.”

“Whose?”

He stared at the screen.

“My mother owned that property.”

Mara felt the pieces shifting again.

“Why would Daniel work there?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Maybe my husband wasn’t connected to your family because of me.”

May you like

Adrian slowly nodded.

“Maybe you were connected to us before I ever found you.”
